How does a handheld structured light 3D scanner work?
Scanners such as the EinScan Pro belong to the structured light group. The projector casts fringe patterns onto the object’s surface, the cameras record how the pattern deforms, and the software calculates the coordinates of thousands of points in each frame. As the user moves the scanner around the object, frames are aligned using geometric features, positioning markers or color texture. The result is a point cloud, which is then turned into a triangle mesh and exported as STL or OBJ. Many scanners of this type offer both handheld and fixed modes with a turntable, giving you a choice between speed and detail.
Handheld vs fixed scanning: when to use which?
| Mode | Advantages | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld rapid | Fast capture, flexible scan angles | Medium to large objects: car bodies, statues, furniture |
| Handheld high accuracy (with markers) | Stable alignment on surfaces with few features | Mechanical parts, molds, large flat surfaces |
| Fixed + turntable | High detail, automatic scanning by angle | Small parts, jewelry, dental models, components |
Tips for clean scan data
- Keep the scanner within its recommended working distance and watch the distance indicator in the software.
- Move the scanner steadily and overlap scan areas so alignment does not slip.
- Shiny, black or transparent surfaces need a thin powder coat. Large flat surfaces should get positioning markers.
- Avoid strong light shining directly on the scan area, since it can wash out the fringe pattern.
- Process the mesh just enough: filter noise and fill holes, but do not over-smooth and lose sharp edges.
Not every company needs to own a scanner. If you scan only occasionally, or also need CAD modeling and deviation checks, the full-service 3D scanning from CT3D Group saves on equipment investment and staff training time.
Frequently asked questions
Can a handheld 3D scanner capture color?
Yes. Many structured light scanners support a color camera module to capture texture. Color data is usually exported as OBJ with a texture image file, suitable for digital display, virtual reality or full-color 3D printing.
What computer specs do I need to run a 3D scanner?
3D scanning software usually needs a computer with a dedicated graphics card, plenty of RAM and high-speed ports as recommended by the manufacturer. A weak setup causes frame drops and makes it easy to lose alignment when scanning large objects.
What formats does 3D scanner data come in?
Common outputs are STL, OBJ and PLY meshes or ASC point clouds. These files work with 3D printing, reverse engineering software and inspection software that compares scans against CAD.
Can a beginner use a handheld 3D scanner?
The basics can be learned quite quickly, but getting accurate data on difficult objects such as shiny surfaces, deep features or large items takes experience in part preparation and data processing. Beginners should get proper training before taking on real projects.
