Do metal 3D printed parts need machining after printing?
Yes, most need post-processing. Common steps include stress-relief heat treatment, cutting parts off the build plate, removing supports, sandblasting or polishing, and CNC machining mating surfaces that need tight tolerances.
How strong are SLM parts compared with cast or machined metal?
High-density SLM parts usually have mechanical properties equal to or better than cast parts of the same alloy. However, properties can vary with build direction, so critical load-bearing parts should be tested and heat treated properly.
When should you choose metal 3D printing over CNC machining?
Metal 3D printing fits parts with internal channels, lattice structures, organic shapes, or several parts merged into one. For simple geometry in large quantities, CNC machining is usually faster and cheaper.
What should you keep in mind when designing parts for metal 3D printing?
Avoid shallow slopes and large overhangs, which need lots of supports. Avoid very thin walls, and add powder escape holes in hollow parts. Leave machining allowance on mating surfaces for CNC finishing after printing.
