How is color 3D scanning different from regular 3D scanning?
Most industrial 3D scanners only record surface geometry, meaning the shape and size of the object. Color 3D scanning adds another layer of data: photos of the surface are “wrapped” onto the model as a texture. The result is a model with the correct shape that also keeps the real colors, patterns and printed labels of the product.
- Geometry data: stored as a triangle mesh, used for inspection, reverse engineering and 3D printing.
- Color data (texture): stored as an image file that goes with the model, usually exported as OBJ or PLY, used for display, rendering and advertising.
Color quality depends heavily on the built-in color camera and the lighting during the scan. A higher-resolution camera gives a sharper texture, but uneven light can still cause blotchy color or shadows on the model.
Uses of color 3D models in marketing and archiving
| Field | How color 3D models are used |
|---|---|
| E-commerce | Let customers rotate the product 360 degrees on the website, so it looks the same as the real item |
| Advertising, rendering | Bring the model into 3D software to make videos and ad images without reshooting the product |
| Museums, heritage | Digitize ceramics, statues and antiques for online display and long-term archiving |
| Education | Biological, geological and artifact models for hands-on visual teaching |
| Color 3D printing | Input data for multi-color 3D printing technologies |
For businesses that only need to digitize a few products for a website or catalog, hiring a color 3D scanning service is usually cheaper than buying a scanner.
Tips for good color scan results
- Use diffuse light spread evenly around the object; avoid direct sunlight and one-sided spotlights.
- Very glossy surfaces (glazed ceramics, metal) cause glare. For color scanning, do not use scanning spray, because it hides the real color. Adjust the angle and exposure instead.
- Keep the object fixed and do not change the lighting between scans, so the colors stay consistent when the scans are merged.
- After scanning, check and touch up the texture at the seams before exporting the file.
Frequently asked questions
Does color 3D scanning reduce geometric accuracy?
No. Color data is captured alongside and mapped onto the model, so geometric accuracy is still set by the scanning sensor. However, color scanning usually needs tighter lighting control, which can make the scan take longer.
What formats are color 3D files usually exported in?
The most common is OBJ with a texture image and a material file, or PLY with color stored per point. For web or AR use, people usually convert further to GLB/glTF.
Which objects are hard to scan in color?
Transparent or highly reflective objects, such as glass, polished metal or glossy glazed ceramics, are the hardest. Jet-black objects or objects with fur or fine fibers are also hard to capture accurately.
Can a color 3D model be used for 3D printing?
Yes, if you use a 3D printing technology that supports color, such as multi-color powder printing or material jetting. With single-color technologies like FDM or resin, only the geometry is used and the color has to be painted by hand after printing.
