ABS, PLA or TPU: which plastic for FDM 3D printing?
Whether you rent a printer, buy one or order a service, the right material decides whether the printed part is usable. The three most common FDM plastics behave quite differently:
| Material | Pros | Cons | Best uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| PLA | Easy to print, little warping, nice surface, low odor | Poor heat resistance, more brittle than ABS | Display models, concept prototypes, student projects, education |
| ABS | Tough, better heat and impact resistance than PLA, can be smoothed with acetone vapor | Warps easily, needs an enclosed chamber, smells while printing | Device housings, engineering parts, functional prototypes |
| TPU | Soft, flexible, elastic, wear resistant | Slow to print, hard to print with Bowden extruders | Gaskets, pads, protective cases, sample shoe soles |
When to rent a printer and when to use a printing service
Renting a 3D printer makes sense when you need to print many times over a short period, have someone who can operate it and want to tune the settings yourself. Examples include students working on projects, startups testing products or tech exhibitions. If you only need a few parts or are new to the machine, ordering a printing service is usually cheaper because you skip the learning curve, failed prints and wasted material.
A few tips if you run an FDM printer yourself:
- Level the bed and check the first layer before every long print.
- Store filament somewhere dry. Damp filament causes pitted surfaces and breaks.
- Keep the printer in a well-ventilated area, especially when printing ABS.
- Do not leave the printer running unattended for long periods.

Frequently asked questions
Which plastic should students use for 3D printed projects?
PLA is usually the best choice for student projects because it is easy to print, looks good and costs little. If a part must handle heat or impact, such as an electronics case near a motor, consider ABS or PETG. For flexible parts, use TPU.
Can FDM printed parts handle water and outdoor use?
FDM plastics generally do not dissolve in water, but thin-walled parts can let water seep through gaps between layers. PLA deforms easily in hot sun, while ABS and PETG hold up better outdoors. A coat of paint improves sealing and UV resistance.
Why do ABS prints warp so often?
ABS shrinks quite a lot as it cools. If the temperature around the part is uneven, the lower layers curl up off the bed. An enclosed chamber, a hot enough bed and a suitable glue or adhesion surface reduce this. Keep the printer away from direct drafts from fans or air conditioning.
Are FDM 3D printers harmful in a classroom?
PLA gives off very little odor and is common in schools, but the printer should still be in a ventilated room. ABS has a stronger smell and more fumes, so use an enclosed printer with a filter or good ventilation. Remind students not to touch the nozzle or heated bed while the printer is running.
