The role of I&C and electrical supervisors in a thermal power plant project
In a thermal power plant project, the I&C (Instrumentation & Control) supervisor and the electrical supervisor are two key roles during installation and commissioning. They represent the owner or the EPC contractor in controlling construction quality and making sure the systems work as designed.
- I&C supervisor: oversees installation of sensors, control valves, control panels and the DCS; checks wiring, calibrates instruments and commissions control loops.
- Electrical supervisor: oversees installation of transformers, switchgear, power cables, grounding and lighting; supervises testing and staged energization.
- Common ground: reading drawings, checking against technical standards, preparing acceptance records and coordinating with contractors and foreign consultants.
The demand for many years of experience and a supervision certificate reflects the nature of the job: mistakes in electrical or control systems can delay commissioning and create major safety risks. In today’s industrial projects, digitizing as-built conditions with a 3D inspection service using 3D scanners is also used to compare installations against the design model and support supervision work.
What should you prepare when applying for a supervisor role on an energy project?
Power plant projects usually hire supervisors through contractors, consultants or technical staffing companies. Whatever the route, a convincing application usually includes:
- Degrees and certificates: a degree in electrical engineering, automation or a related field; a valid supervision practice certificate; occupational safety certificates if you have them.
- List of past projects: project name, size, your specific role and time on the project, with priority given to thermal power, hydropower and substation projects.
- Description of actual work: systems you supervised, equipment you accepted and the technical standards you used regularly.
- Language skills: many projects have foreign consultants and contractors, so being able to read technical documents and communicate in English is a big plus.
- References: a former site manager or project manager who can vouch for your skills.
In interviews, candidates are often asked how they handle site situations such as differences between drawings and reality, equipment failing tests or schedule conflicts between contractors. Preparing concrete examples from your own experience will make your application stand out.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant job posting still open?
No. It was posted in early 2018 and has expired. The content now only serves as a reference for typical requirements for supervisor roles on thermal power projects.
What is I&C in a power plant?
I&C stands for Instrumentation and Control. The system includes sensors, measuring instruments, control valves and control software that keep the plant running stably and safely.
Why do supervisor roles require a practice certificate?
Because the supervisor is responsible for confirming construction quality and signing acceptance records under construction law. The certificate proves the person has the required expertise and is allowed to do this work.
Where can new electrical and automation graduates start on a power plant project?
New engineers usually start as site engineers, QA/QC engineers or commissioning engineers under an experienced supervisor. After a few projects, they can build enough experience and certificates to take on a supervisor role.
