Frequently asked questions
What should an architecture office look for in a 3D printer?
The printer should run reliably for long periods, have an enclosed chamber to reduce plastic fumes and noise, and have a build volume big enough for typical building blocks. Easy slicing software and low-toxicity materials such as PLA are also priorities in an office.
Can a multi-story building be printed as one piece?
It can, but it’s usually better to split it by floor or by block so it’s easier to print and paint, and so the floors can be lifted off to show the interior layout. Splitting by floor also lets you fix one part without reprinting the whole model.
Which materials are good for architectural models?
PLA is widely used because it’s easy to print, warps little and has little odor. For small, sharp details such as railings and reliefs, resin gives a better surface finish. Bases and large terrain can be combined with CNC or laser cutting.
Can a SketchUp file be 3D printed directly?
It can be exported to STL, but it usually needs extra work, because SketchUp models often have open faces, walls with no thickness and details that are too thin at small scales. Checking and repairing the mesh before printing avoids errors and saves material.
Is it better to print scale models in-house or use a service?
