Introducing the FreeScan X5, a large-format 3D scanner used in mechanical engineering.
FREESCAN SCANNERS:
FreeScan 3D scanners use laser beams to capture data from a part. Shining 3D, the 3D scanner and 3D printer manufacturer, offers 3 FreeScan models:- FreeScan X3 3D scanner with 3 laser beams.
- FreeScan X5 3D scanner with 5 beams.
- FreeScan X7 3D scanner with 7 beams.
WORKING WITH THE FREESCAN X5:
Because it is handheld and easy to operate, you can capture every angle of a part. The beam pattern of 10 crossing lines covers a large area per pass, with good resolution and accuracy. The FreeScan X5 is used in mechanical engineering, automotive, casting and more.

How does a handheld laser 3D scanner work?
A handheld laser 3D scanner projects laser lines onto the object’s surface while two cameras record how the lines bend along the surface. Using triangulation, the software calculates the coordinates of each point and builds a point cloud. To know where the scanner is in space as you move, the system usually relies on reflective markers placed on or around the object.
Compared with structured-light scanners (which project a whole light pattern), laser scanners have some distinct traits:
| Criteria | Handheld laser scanning | Structured-light scanning |
|---|---|---|
| Dark, shiny surfaces | Usually handles them better, less spray needed | More easily affected, often needs matte spray |
| Ambient light | Less affected, usable on the shop floor | More sensitive to strong light |
| Large objects | Flexible, scans in place | Best for small and medium parts on a turntable |
| Color data | Usually no color | Many models support color scanning |
Common uses in mechanical engineering, automotive and casting
- Casting and forging inspection: compare scan data with the CAD file to find deviations, warping and missing machining allowance.
- Reverse engineering: capture machine parts, old molds and spare parts with no drawings to rebuild CAD files.
- Car modding and accessories: scan body panels and engine bays to design body kits and brackets that fit the real car precisely.
- Industrial maintenance: measure wear on pump impellers, molds and large shafts right at the plant without shipping them out.
Tips for using a laser scanner
Place markers evenly and avoid straight lines so the scanner tracks reliably. Keep the scanning distance within the recommended working range and overlap your passes. Calibrate the scanner regularly following the manufacturer’s instructions to maintain accuracy. For occasional inspection projects, companies can use a 3D inspection service with 3D scanners to get clear deviation reports without investing in equipment.
Frequently asked questions
What does a higher number of laser lines mean for a handheld scanner?
More laser lines capture more points per frame, so scanning is faster and it is easier to cover the whole surface. Final accuracy, however, also depends on the cameras, algorithms and calibration.
Does a handheld laser scanner need reference markers?
Most handheld laser scanners need reflective markers to track the scanner’s position in space as it moves. Place markers on flat areas, in a random pattern, and away from important features.
Can a laser scanner scan shiny metal?
Laser scanners usually handle metal and dark surfaces better than white-light scanners, often without spray. Mirror-like surfaces may still need a thin coat of matte scanning spray.
Which software can use laser scan data?
The data is usually exported as STL, OBJ or point clouds, which work in reverse engineering software, 3D inspection software and most CAD/CAM programs. Choose the format based on your next processing step.
