The role of markers and spray in 3D scanning
Optical scanners work out their position in space from the geometry and features of the surface. When an object has large flat areas, or is symmetrical or repetitive, the software can easily get “lost” and align the data wrongly. Positioning markers act as fixed reference points, so the scanner knows exactly where it is. White powder spray adds a matte coating so light reflects evenly from shiny, transparent or dark surfaces, which are the “enemies” of optical scanners.
How to place markers correctly
- Place them randomly. Avoid straight lines or even grids, because the software has trouble telling them apart.
- Keep a moderate distance between markers so the scanner always sees enough of them in each frame, as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Do not place them on sharp edges, small fillets or areas that need accurate data. The holes left by the markers are filled in the software.
- For small parts, place the markers on a fixture or base plate around the part instead of on the part itself.
- Choose a marker size that suits the scanner’s working distance.
Comparing surface coatings for scanning
| Type | Features | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Self-vanishing powder spray | The coating disappears on its own after a while | Good for parts that must stay clean and need quick scanning |
| Standard powder spray | Durable coating that must be cleaned off after scanning | Spray thin, even coats so you do not add thickness |
| Chalk powder mixed with alcohol (homemade) | Low cost | Thickness is hard to control and can affect accuracy |
The thicker the coating, the larger the measurement error. For parts that need high accuracy, use a product made for 3D scanning and spray several very thin coats. If you do not want to prepare difficult parts yourself, you can send them to CT3D Group’s professional 3D scanning service, where technicians will prepare the surface and scan it with the right process.
Frequently asked questions
Does 3D scanning spray damage the part’s surface?
Usually not, if you use a product made for 3D scanning. The self-vanishing type disappears after a while, and the standard type can be wiped off with a cloth or water. For sensitive surfaces such as antiques or lacquerware, test on a hidden area first.
Can I 3D scan without positioning markers?
Yes, if the object has plenty of geometric features or clear texture and the scanner supports geometry-based alignment. For flat, symmetrical or large objects, markers make alignment more accurate and stable.
Can 3D scanning markers be reused?
Markers are usually single-use, because they lose stickiness and the edges curl after peeling. Reusing curled markers can make the scanner misread the marker center, which hurts accuracy.
Does the powder coating change the scanned dimensions?
Yes. The thicker the coating, the larger the error. So spray several very thin coats, just enough to remove the shine, and use a fine-grained product made for scanning on parts that need high accuracy.
