The EinScan Pro Plus is a low-cost 3D scanner that is widely used on the market today. It is versatile enough for many fields, and the field where 3D scanners are used most right now is sculpture.
EinScan Pro Plus 3D Scanner: the #1 low-cost 3D scanner for statues.
This is the statue we need to 3D scan. It is fairly small, which is just right for the automatic scanning mode of the EinScan Pro Plus 3D scanner.
The system in the photo includes:
- EinScan Pro Plus 3D scanner (can be detached and used handheld).
- A sturdy tripod.
- A 360-degree automatic turntable.
The data is created as a mesh and exported as an STL or OBJ file.
This data can be used for archiving, 3D printing (rapid prototyping) and CNC carving (wood sculpture).

3D scanning a statue: from preparation to file export
Statues are among the most common objects people 3D scan, but they take skill because of their freeform surfaces, deep recesses and small details. A typical workflow for scanning a small statue looks like this:
- Prepare the piece: clean off dust and check for glossy or dark surfaces that may need anti-glare treatment.
- Automatic turntable scan: place the statue in the center of the turntable and scan a full 360 degrees. Then flip or tilt it to capture the top and bottom.
- Extra handheld scanning: switch to handheld mode to capture deep recesses such as clothing folds, gaps between fingers and the eyes.
- Merge and process the mesh: align the scans, remove noise, fill holes and make the mesh watertight.
- Export: STL for 3D printing and CNC, OBJ if you need color.
What can you do with statue scan data?
| Purpose | Data processing needed | Production method |
|---|---|---|
| Enlarging a statue | Scaling, hollowing, splitting into parts | CNC foam or large-format 3D printing, then mold making |
| Making many copies | Watertight mesh, detail cleanup | 3D print a master, cast in silicone molds |
| Wood carving | Surface optimization, choosing machining direction | 3-axis or 4-axis wood CNC, finished by a craftsman |
| Archiving and restoration | Keep the original high-resolution data | Digital archive, print copies when needed |
Tips for CNC wood carving from statue scans
CNC machining wood from scan data gives you a fast, correctly proportioned blank, but you need to keep tool limits in mind. Recesses that are too deep and narrow for the cutter to reach will need hand carving by a craftsman. For statues in the round, a 4-axis CNC machine with a rotary axis can machine around the body more smoothly. Choose wood with an even grain so the machined surface comes out smooth with fewer tear-outs. If you have a statue you want reproduced in wood, see our CNC wood cutting service from 3D scan data.
Frequently asked questions
How small can a statue be and still be 3D scanned?
Statues just a few centimeters tall can still be scanned if you use a high-resolution scanner with a small point spacing. For very fine details like fingers or small patterns, use the highest resolution mode and scan from many angles.
Can 3D scanning a statue capture facial details?
Yes, with the right equipment and scan settings. Faces have many recesses such as the eyes, nose and ears, so scan extra angled passes to avoid missing data.
Can I enlarge a statue from scan data without sculpting it again?
Yes. The scan data is scaled up on the computer, then a blank is made with CNC foam or 3D printing and the surface is finished. This keeps the proportions accurate and cuts the time a lot compared to sculpting by hand.
Can statue scan files be sold or shared?
Technically yes, but watch out for copyright. If the statue is someone else’s copyrighted work, scanning it to copy or sell requires the owner’s permission.
