3D printing Buddha statues and scaling up composite Buddha statue models at low cost and high economic value with 3D technology: 3D scanners, 3D printers and 3D scaling software are now widely used in the production process of many workshops that create Buddha statues, produce Buddha statues, Catholic statues and composite models in general in Ho Chi Minh City and nearby provinces.
Process
- 3D scan the Buddha statue, Christ statue or other model you want to resize.
- Import it into 3D design software and scale it to the required sizes.
- Process the data so the Buddhist statue can be 3D printed with a beautiful, refined finish.
- 3D print the statue in each size on a 3D printer.
Economic benefits
- Model making is more than 10 times faster than doing it by hand with clay sculpting or wood carving.
- Saves more than 60% on each set of models. A handmade set from 30 cm to 1.8 m would cost over 200,000,000 VND.

From 3D print to finished composite statue
A 3D print is usually not the final product. It is the master model used to make a mold and cast the statue. The full process from print to composite statue usually includes:
- Finishing the master: sand off layer lines, apply filler, and sharpen details on the face, hands and robe folds.
- Planning the mold split: choose sensible parting lines so the mold releases easily and seams stay hidden.
- Making the mold: coat with silicone to capture detail, then reinforce the outside with a composite jacket to hold the shape.
- Casting: brush on gelcoat, lay up several layers of resin and fiberglass, let it cure, then demold.
- Finishing and painting: join the pieces, clean up seams, prime and paint, with bronze, stone or gold leaf effects on request.
A good mold can cast many statues, so the more copies you make, the lower the model cost per statue.
Tips for resizing statues with 3D technology
Scaling a statue up or down on a computer is fast, but to get a good result at every size, keep these points in mind:
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| Scaling down loses detail and makes fingers too thin | Thicken thin features and simplify patterns that are too small |
| Scaling up exposes flaws in the scan data | Scan the original at high resolution and use digital sculpting to sharpen details |
| Large statues exceed the printer’s build size | Split into blocks with joints, or CNC-cut foam as a core and shape the surface |
| Visual proportions when placed up high | Slightly adjust head and face proportions so it still looks balanced from below |
For altar statues, garden statues or large outdoor statues, composite is a popular material because it is light, durable and easy to finish. You can check our composite statue production service for advice on the process from model to finished piece.
Frequently asked questions
Can a 3D printed statue go directly on an altar?
Yes, if the statue is fully finished, well painted and made from a durable enough material. For long-term altar statues, though, many people use the 3D print as a master to cast in composite or polyresin, because it is sturdier and feels more solid.
Can composite statues withstand sun and rain outdoors?
Yes, if they are made properly with a gelcoat layer and UV-resistant paint. After a few years, outdoor statues should be cleaned and recoated to keep their color.
Can a statue be made from photos without a physical model?
Yes. An artist or technician digitally sculpts it from the photos, then 3D prints a model for the customer to approve before the mold is made and the statue is cast.
How many times can a statue mold be used?
It depends on the silicone quality, the statue’s complexity and how the mold is stored. A well-kept mold can usually be used for many casts before it needs to be remade.
