3D printing technology and its applications keep getting more advanced. We are approaching the threshold of endless creativity, where 3D technology turns any idea into reality. So it is no great surprise that an architecture firm in China has just finished an extremely sturdy villa using 3D printing.
The villa can withstand earthquakes of up to magnitude 8, and even more notable, it was built in only 45 days. The builder did not reveal the price, but almost every house built with 3D printing costs far less than a conventional one, and this villa is likely no exception.

Conceived, designed and built by HuaShang Tengda, this 3D printed villa was printed entirely on site, unlike some other 3D printed houses that print separate sections and then assemble them. HuaShang Tengda also created a new 3D printing process that optimizes the materials needed for the build. Before pressing the start button on the computer, a construction crew installs the building’s frame, including the steel rebar and the villa’s water pipes.
“Because it is fast to build, low cost, uses simple materials and is environmentally friendly, this type of house will improve people’s quality of life, and 3D printed construction will be the future of the building industry,” HuaShang Tengda says on its website. “It can improve the lives of farmers. The social benefits of 3D printed housing are limitless.”
To run its special 3D printing process, HuaShang Tengda built and developed 4 main software systems for concrete mixing, material delivery, plumbing and electrical pipe assembly, and 3D printing. The company used 20 tons of concrete to build the whole villa. Some sections of wall are 2440 mm thick. Once printing is done, workers start painting and decorating the interior.
3D technology:
HuaShang Tengda hopes its technology will be used to print many houses to help people in hardship, or even to build skyscrapers. Given its price and strength, HuaShang Tengda’s new 3D printing technology may quickly draw attention from other builders. Hopefully it can spark a revolution in the construction industry.

Construction 3D printing and earthquake resistance
Construction 3D printing uses a robotic arm or gantry to extrude a special concrete or mortar mix layer by layer to build a structure. Because the shape is seamless and uniform, a 3D printed structure can spread loads well, which helps improve load-bearing capacity and earthquake resistance compared with some traditional methods.
Frequently asked questions
How does construction 3D printing work?
A construction printer extrudes a special concrete or mortar mix layer by layer based on a 3D design, stacking layers to form the walls and structure without formwork.
Why can 3D printed houses resist earthquakes well?
The structure is printed seamlessly and uniformly, and its geometry can be optimized for strength. When designed to code, this spreads loads more evenly and improves resistance to shaking.
How fast can a house be built with 3D printing?
The shell of a small house can be printed in a few days, much faster than traditional construction, thanks to automation and fewer formwork steps.
How much does 3D printed construction cost?
3D printing saves on labor and formwork and reduces waste, but the total cost still depends on the equipment, materials and project size.
