{ 3D SCANNING} As Industry 4.0 technology develops, 3D scanners and the technology behind them play a key role. Alongside 3D printers, 3D scanners give 3D printers better input, give design departments faster input and speed up product inspection.
3D SCANNING AND ITS APPLICATIONS:
- Providing input for “high-speed production machines”: 3D printers, CNC machines…
- Input for product and concept design departments, and for mold design.
- Product inspection,
3D SCANNING PROVIDES INPUT FOR 3D PRINTERS:
Many industries use data from 3D scanners directly for production 3D printing, for example jewelry and gold and silver casting, bronze and iron casting, dentistry, and maintenance centers for production lines.
- How customers use the EinScan II (EinScan D) 3D scanner
- 3D scanning a Honda motorcycle engine with the EinScan Pro Plus.
- Cubicon 3D Scanner | 3DS-200D
3D SCANNING PROVIDES DATA FOR DESIGN DEPARTMENTS:
3D scan data comes as STL (a mesh). To design a mold from it, you first need reverse engineering. The data can then be exported to any format you need:- CAD – STP – STEP – IGS – SW – CATPart…
3D SCANNING SPEEDS UP 3D INSPECTION:
3D inspection takes just a few mouse clicks:- 3D scan the part to be inspected.
- Import the scan data and the CAD design data, pick the machining datums and overlay them.
- Export a report as a clear color map, as in the image below.

Common 3D scanning technologies today
The term “3D scanner” covers several technologies, each with its own strengths in accuracy, speed and scan range. Knowing the differences helps you pick the right equipment or service for the job:
| Technology | Principle | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Structured light | Projects light patterns; cameras measure how the patterns deform | Mechanical parts, consumer products, statues; can capture color |
| Handheld laser triangulation | Projects laser lines; cameras measure the line positions | Difficult surfaces, industrial parts, quality inspection |
| Long-range laser (LiDAR, TLS) | Measures the time or phase of the returning laser beam | Buildings, factories, terrain, heritage sites |
| Photogrammetry | Builds 3D from many overlapping photos | Very large objects, artifacts, characters, digital content |
Real-world uses of 3D scanning in manufacturing
- Reverse engineering: digitize parts with no drawings so they can be remade or improved.
- Quality inspection: compare real parts against the CAD file to find warping and shrinkage.
- Custom-fit products: scan bodies, faces or mating parts to design close-fitting accessories.
- Preservation and display: digitally archive artifacts and statues, and make replicas for exhibitions.
- Digital content: create 3D models for games, film, e-commerce and virtual reality.
Buying a scanner vs. hiring a 3D scanning service
If you scan every day, have a dedicated engineer and a stable workflow, buying your own scanner can make sense. If your needs are occasional, your objects vary a lot in size, or you also need CAD modeling and inspection, a service gives you access to several scanning technologies without the investment. You can send samples or product photos to the CT3D Group 3D scanning service for advice on the right scanning technology for your size and accuracy needs.
Frequently asked questions
Can 3D scanning capture real people?
Yes. Eye-safe structured-light scanners or multi-camera photo rigs are commonly used to scan people for portrait statues, figures or custom-fit protective gear. The person needs to stay still during the scan so the data doesn’t blur.
What does 3D scanner accuracy mean?
Accuracy is the deviation between the scan data and the object’s real dimensions, usually stated by the manufacturer in millimeters. Don’t confuse it with resolution (the spacing between points). A high-resolution scanner doesn’t necessarily have high overall accuracy on large objects.
How is 3D scanning different from photogrammetry?
A 3D scanner measures geometry directly with light or a laser, so it is usually more dimensionally accurate. Photogrammetry builds a model from photos. It does well with color and very large objects, but its dimensional accuracy depends heavily on the shooting technique and scale references.
Can 3D scan data be 3D printed right away?
In most cases yes, after mesh processing: aligning data, filling holes, making the model watertight and adjusting scale. If you need to edit dimensions or machine the part, reverse engineer it into a CAD file.
