The Thor3D 3D scanner uses light-based technology with a large capture area. It can capture an adult in 60 seconds, with complete data ready 5 minutes later. We rate this product line highly for handicrafts, sculpture and conservation, and now the fashion and apparel industry has started using it too.
More on 3D scanners:
How does a 3D scanner for fashion work?
The person being scanned stands on an automatic turntable, and the technician holds the Thor3D scanner, with its large projection area (700*1000 mm), to capture the data.
The person only needs to hold still for about 1 minute and the scan is done.
The scanner works well with all colors, though black and glossy surfaces are somewhat limited.
After scanning, the data is saved as a mesh, with or without color as required.
Automation is being widely adopted in the garment industry, and our Thor3D is a device that meets customer needs well.

What does 3D body scanning bring to the fashion industry?
In traditional tailoring, body measurements are taken with a tape measure, a few dozen of them. It’s quick, but it depends on the person measuring and can’t capture the real body shape, such as shoulder curve, back sway or asymmetry. A full-body 3D scan captures the whole body surface as a digital model. Measurements can then be extracted automatically, repeated many times with consistent results and stored long term.
Common uses in fashion and apparel:
- Made-to-measure tailoring: suits, wedding dresses and premium uniforms that fit each person exactly.
- Building size charts from real anthropometric data of the target customer group.
- 3D garment design and virtual try-on before cutting sample fabric.
- Making mannequins to the real measurements of a model or customer.
- Designing close-fitting accessories such as shoes, hats, protective gear and sportswear.
Things to keep in mind when scanning people
People are hard “objects” to scan because they always move slightly as they breathe and keep their balance. So you need equipment with a wide scanning area and high speed to shorten the time the model has to stand still. Clothing for the scan should be tight-fitting, light-colored and matte. Thick black hair is often hard to capture, so the person can wear a swim cap, or you can accept rebuilding the hair afterward. The model should stand in a standard pose with arms slightly out so the armpits and hips aren’t hidden.
For projects that need data from many people, such as building size charts, standardize the process: same pose, same type of clothing and same position on the turntable, so the data can be compared.
Security and privacy of body data
Full-body scan data is sensitive information. Businesses should clearly state why they collect it, get consent from the person being scanned, store it securely and use it only for the stated purpose. This also builds customer trust when offering technology-based made-to-measure services.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a full-body 3D scan take?
The actual scan usually takes just a few minutes with a wide-area handheld scanner or one combined with a turntable. Processing, merging and cleaning the model afterward can take extra time, depending on the level of detail needed.
Are measurements from a 3D scan more accurate than manual measuring?
They are usually more consistent, since they don’t depend on the person measuring, and you can re-measure the model at any time. Still, the results are affected by the model’s pose, clothing and movement during the scan.
What should I wear for a 3D body scan?
Wear tight-fitting, light-colored, matte clothes such as fitted sportswear. Avoid loose clothes, black, reflective materials or lots of folds, as they distort the body shape and make the data hard to capture.
Can body scan data be used to make mannequins?
Yes. The 3D model can be reposed and split into sections, then 3D printed or CNC-cut from foam as a pattern, and then used to make composite molds for producing mannequins to the real measurements.
