Jewelry 3D scanners need very high resolution, so they are usually very expensive: you need $100,000 or more to own one. That price makes them hard to justify. Knowing this, we developed the Optimscan 5M jewelry 3D scanner line in Vietnam. It meets the needs of the jewelry industry at a surprisingly low price.

Every 3D scanner line has its own strengths. The Optimscan line (OKIO – Japan) offers high resolution, thanks to its two 5 MP cameras, and an adjustable capture area that lets it handle objects from a few millimeters to several meters. We supply this equipment in the Vietnamese market. We know the machine well, and customers get thorough, professional training. The digital workflow in jewelry making
Jewelry was one of the first industries to adopt 3D technology, and it remains one of the most effective uses. The pieces are small and detailed, and they often need to be copied or made in different sizes. A typical digital workflow looks like this:
- 3D scanning the original: rings, pendants, coins and badges are scanned with a high-resolution scanner, often with a turntable to capture every side.
- Editing in software: change the ring size, engrave a name, add stone settings and adjust wall thickness for casting.
- 3D printing a wax or castable resin pattern: a printed pattern made from a material that burns out cleanly replaces hand-carved wax.
- Investment casting: the pattern is set in a plaster mold, burned out, and precious metal is poured into the cavity.
- Finishing: cut off the sprues, polish, set the stones and plate.
Technical requirements for jewelry equipment
| Stage | Key requirement | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 3D scanning | High resolution, small scan area | Captures patterns, engraving and very small prongs |
| 3D printing | Thin layers, smooth surface | Less polishing after casting |
| Print material | Clean burnout, low ash | Avoids porosity and surface defects in casting |
| Design | Strong enough walls and prongs | Ensures the metal fills completely and holds stones securely |
Shiny metal jewelry surfaces usually need a very thin coat of powder before scanning. The thinner the coat, the more detail you keep, so use a dedicated scanning powder and the right spraying technique.
Workshops that have not yet invested in a high-resolution printer can use a high-detail resin 3D printing service for jewelry patterns, design samples or master patterns for molds.
Beyond production, 3D data also helps jewelry stores archive exclusive designs, show designs to customers on screen before casting, and make custom changes without starting over.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between wax 3D printing and castable resin 3D printing?
Wax 3D printing gives patterns that burn out very cleanly, suited to tiny details and high casting surface quality. Castable resin is easier to print and store, but needs a suitable burnout schedule to avoid casting defects.
Can I 3D scan a ring to remake it in a different size?
Yes. After scanning, a technician can change the ring’s inner diameter in software while keeping the outer pattern, then print a new pattern for casting.
Does 3D scanning scratch the jewelry?
No. An optical scanner does not touch the piece. Any powder coating is very thin and washes off completely after scanning.
Can coins and badges with fine details be 3D scanned?
Yes, with a high-resolution scanner and a small scan area. Shallow relief needs the right lighting and scan angles to get crisp data.
