After the first 3D printers were commercialized and hit the market, 3D printing found a wave of applications, not only in architecture, construction, fashion, fine arts, medicine and education, but also in other manufacturing industries such as consumer goods, cars, aircraft and aerospace.
DENTAL 3D PRINTING
3D printers can now print tooth roots, dental bridges and parts used for dental implants. A whole jaw can even be modeled in 3D from X-ray scans, and a 3D printer can then print that jaw. This makes diagnosis and treatment faster and more accurate than traditional methods. Patients also get replacement parts and false teeth that look better, thanks to modern 3D printing.

REMOVING BARRIERS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
3D printing can be personalized to each person’s missing body part and produce a matching part to fit the body. This lets 3D printers lower production costs and reach many more people with disabilities. Technology designer Scott Summit, co-founder of Bespoke Innovations, says 3D printing has been replacing traditional prosthetic limb production for years. In the past, medicine often used sponges to shape prosthetics, followed by making a mold and casting. 3D printers have brought great improvements to medicine.

3D PRINTING TECHNOLOGY SAVES LIVES FASTER
When an accident victim needs urgent surgery to replace or graft body parts while their life is at risk, 3D printers offer the best answer to this hard problem. They help doctors quickly print replacement parts after diagnosis, cutting the time needed to prepare for surgery and making the replacement parts more accurate. Dr. J. Atala, director of the Wake Forest Institute, says that for patients with a pelvis broken in an accident, a fast bone graft is absolutely necessary, and 3D printing can print the bone sections right away so they are ready for the surgeons.
Dr. Anthony J. Atala of the Wake Forest Institute speaks very highly of 3D printing in medicine.
3D printing also has huge potential in “bioprinting”, which means making human body parts for transplants and replacements, such as skin, a trachea, a bladder or a heart, with a few simple steps on a 3D printer. The first commercial 3D bioprinter was released by Organovo back in 2009.
The Wake Forest hospital is also developing 3D bioprinters to make full-size kidneys that work like real ones, along with other organs such as the heart, liver and uterus. Once testing and research succeed, 3D technology will open a new era in medicine: lower costs, less need for organ donors and better, healthier lives for many people.
