DLP and SLA 3D printers use SLA-DLP printing technology. The two are nearly the same at heart: both use light to build parts, and the print material is a liquid photopolymer resin. When exposed to light, the resin hardens into very thin solid layers stacked on top of each other to form a complete solid object. Still, each technology has its own traits, and users should pick the one that best fits each product’s requirements to get the best results.

How do DLP and SLA differ?
Both DLP and SLA cure liquid photopolymer resin layer by layer with light, but they deliver the light differently, which gives each its own pros and cons:
| Criteria | DLP | SLA |
|---|---|---|
| Light source | A projector exposes the whole layer image at once | A laser traces the outline of each layer |
| Speed | Layer time is nearly constant, so it is fast when printing many small parts in one batch | Depends on the area to be scanned on each layer |
| Resolution | Depends on pixel size; very sharp on small build areas | Depends on laser spot size; stays sharp across large build areas |
| Build size | Usually small to medium | Can be very large on industrial machines |
| Typical uses | Jewelry, dental, small parts | Large design models, architectural models, master patterns for molds |
How jewelry is made with resin 3D printing
Jewelry was one of the first industries to use resin 3D printing well, because the pieces are small, detailed and need a very smooth surface. The process usually goes like this:
- 3D design: model rings, pendants and earrings in jewelry CAD software, with thickness, prong settings and sizes worked out in advance.
- Printing: use castable resin that burns out cleanly, or standard resin for preview samples and rubber mold masters.
- Investment casting: the prints are attached to a tree, invested in plaster, and fired until the resin burns out. Then metal is poured into the mold.
- Finishing: cut from the tree, polish, set stones and plate.
The biggest benefit is that jewelers can create fine patterns, hollow structures and personalized designs that are very hard or slow to carve by hand in wax. Frequently asked questions
How is castable resin different from standard resin?
Castable resin is formulated to burn out cleanly in a plaster mold, leaving no ash that would pit the metal surface. Standard resin tends to leave residue and expand when fired, cracking the mold. So if you plan to cast metal directly, use the right resin and a suitable burnout schedule.
Does 3D printing fully replace wax carvers in jewelry making?
Not entirely. 3D printing replaces most of the model-making work, but craftsmanship still decides casting, bench work, stone setting and polishing. Many workshops combine both: 3D printing for complex pieces and handwork for special details. 3D design skills are now a big advantage for jewelers.
Are DLP prints smooth enough for jewelry casting?
Yes. High-resolution DLP and LCD printers usually give a surface smooth enough for jewelry casting, especially on small parts. Final quality also depends on part orientation, layer thickness and support layout. Place support marks on inner faces or spots that are easy to polish.
Can jewelry be 3D printed directly in metal?
Yes. Powder-based metal 3D printing can print parts directly in gold, silver or alloys, but the equipment and materials are expensive. Most jewelry workshops still print in resin and then investment cast because it is cheaper. Direct metal printing suits special structures that are hard to cast.
