Vietnam’s wood industry leads exports among agricultural and forestry products and has very good prospects. In 2017 it posted a trade surplus of 5.48 billion USD, up 7.8% from 2016.
Wood and wood products lead exports among agricultural and forestry products 2017 was a successful year for agriculture, forestry and fisheries, with growth of 2.94%, above the government target of 2.84%. The government aimed for exports of 32–33 billion USD, but the sector reached 36.37 billion USD, more than 4 billion USD above the previous year, with a surplus of 8.55 billion USD, up more than 1 billion USD. Among agricultural and forestry products, wood and wood products have the highest export value, making up 27% of the group’s total. According to the latest figures from the General Department of Customs, exports of wood and wood products in 2017 rose 10% from 2016 to over 7.66 billion USD, while imports of this group were worth 2.18 billion USD, up 16%. That gave Vietnam’s wood industry a trade surplus of 5.48 billion USD, up 7.8% from the year before. Wood and wood products are mainly exported to the US, which accounts for 43% of the country’s total exports in this group, at 3.27 billion USD, up 15.7% from the previous year. In 2017, exports of wood and wood products to every major market grew compared with the year before. Notably, some smaller markets grew very strongly: Denmark up over 38.8% to 22.75 million USD, the UAE up 41.8% to 28.7 million USD, and Russia up 39% to 3.83 million USD.
For the full year 2017, exports of wood and wood products reached 7.66 billion USD. This was the first time exports of this group passed the 7 billion USD mark in a year, beating the target of 7.3–7.5 billion USD set at the start of the year.

Why exports grew well
According to experts, the main reason for the wood industry’s strong growth is that wood furniture products grew faster than raw wood. In 2016, wood furniture exports reached 5.13 billion USD, up 7% from 2015 and 73.6% of total exports of wood and wood products. In 2017, exports of wood and wood products overall rose 10% to 7.66 billion USD, while wood furniture exports alone rose 11.4% to 5.71 billion USD, or 74.5% of the group’s total.
In many of the world’s largest furniture markets, such as the US, the EU and Japan, Vietnamese furniture usually ranks second only to Chinese furniture by export value. Wood furniture exports have grown steadily since 2015 because these products go mainly to very stable markets such as the US, the EU and Australia. Raw wood, by contrast, is exported mostly to China, where demand is unstable.
The recovery of the world economy in 2017, especially growth in the real estate market, was an important factor supporting Vietnam’s wood exports.
In addition, the bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements Vietnam has signed and put into effect have given wood exports a big boost. Exports of wood and wood products are forecast to grow well in 2018.
Bright prospects for the wood industry
Besides strong export growth, Vietnam’s wood industry also dominates the domestic market, with consumption of about 2 billion USD per year, growing 5–6% per year.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the global furniture market will grow by an average of 4.2% per year in 2016–2024, with 3.5% growth expected in 2018 alone. By 2024, the global furniture market is expected to exceed 550 billion USD. Asia-Pacific is the largest furniture-consuming region and made up one third of the global furniture market in 2016.
According to a CSIL survey of 100 countries in its World Furniture Outlook 2017/2018, the global furniture market is currently worth about 420 billion USD. The largest furniture importers are the US, Germany, the UK, France and Canada.
Vietnam is currently the world’s 8th largest producer of wood furniture, after China, the US, Germany, Italy, India, Poland and Japan. Vietnam’s furniture output makes up about 2% of world furniture production.

How do a 3D scanner and a CNC wood carving machine work together?
The real sample is 3D scanned to get an STL or OBJ file, which is then edited and scaled in software. The file goes into CAM software to generate toolpaths, then to the CNC carving machine to cut the wood blank, and finally craftsmen finish it by hand.
What is the difference between 3-axis and 4-axis CNC wood carving machines?
A 3-axis machine carves from one side, which suits relief panels, motifs and flat parts. A 4-axis machine adds a rotary axis to carve around the blank, so it can make round statues, columns and table and chair legs.
What does investing in a 3D scanner and CNC bring a wood workshop?
