Reverse engineering is the process of building CAD data for an object from a physical sample, with the help of a 3D scanner. Reverse engineering lets companies and manufacturers get 3D data in the shortest possible time. In recent years, more and more businesses have turned to reverse engineering services. When 3D scanners and reverse engineering software cost too much, outsourcing the work is the right and most economical choice.
Products that often use reverse engineering services:
- 3D scanning and reverse engineering of footwear: soles, insoles, complete shoes, prosthetic feet…
- 3D scanning and reverse engineering of stamped parts.
- 3D scanning and reverse engineering of injection-molded plastic parts.
- And many other products.
- High accuracy: so the CAD data after reverse engineering matches the sample as closely as possible. In Vietnam, the most accurate 3D scanner used for reverse engineering and 3D scanning reaches an accuracy of 0.005 (5/1000 mm) – the Atos Core 135 3D scanner.
- Sharp detail (high resolution): to capture the hardest, most complex data while keeping the sharp edges and corners of the part, which makes reverse engineering easier.
- Regular checks and maintenance, so the 3D scanner keeps the accuracy stated by the manufacturer.
- A few other minor requirements.
- SolidWorks training for furniture – Online SolidWorks course
- Large-format 3D printers – 3D printing service in Ho Chi Minh City

- EinScan Pro 3D scanner (a popular low-cost 3D scanner for wood, also used for molds and mechanical parts)
- EaScan D 3D scanner (for molds and mechanical parts – built for industry)
- Optimscan 3M, 5M 3D scanners (built for industry)
- And other 3D scanners.

Frequently asked questions
How is reverse engineering different from 3D scanning alone?
3D scanning only produces mesh data (STL) that describes the surface of an object. Reverse engineering is the next step: rebuilding a solid CAD model with clear planes, cylinders, holes and dimensions that you can edit, turn into drawings and machine.
What formats are reverse engineering results usually delivered in?
Most often STEP and IGES, which open in almost any CAD software, or native files such as SolidWorks on request. You can also get 2D drawings and a deviation report comparing the CAD model with the scan data.
Can worn or deformed parts be reverse engineered?
Yes. Engineers use the scan data plus engineering knowledge to restore the original design intent, for example flattening planes and restoring standard hole diameters. If you have the mating part or tolerance information, the result will be more accurate.
How long does reverse engineering take?
It depends on how complex the part is. Simple mechanical parts usually take a few days, while products with many freeform surfaces, like vehicle body panels, shoe soles or artistic pieces, take longer.
Is it legal to reverse engineer another company’s product?
Reverse engineering for repair, replacement parts or research is generally accepted. Copying a product protected by a design patent or invention patent to make and sell it may infringe intellectual property rights. Check the protection status before you commercialize anything.
