These 3D scanners are made by Shining 3D. Shining 3D has been a trusted Chinese 3D scanner manufacturer since 1999 and has led the affordable 3D scanner market ever since.
Which affordable 3D scanners are available?
I. Einscan S 3D scanner:
WIDE SCAN RANGE 700*700*700 With a scan range from 1 to 700 mm, the Einscan S is a powerful tool for reverse engineering and mold design for small plastic parts and souvenirs. Reverse engineering becomes very simple with the Einscan S.
FULL-COLOR SCANNING With full-color 3D scanning, the Einscan S is the most capable low-cost 3D scanner yet.
VERSATILE SCANNING It also offers an automatic scanning mode. The Einscan S 3D scanner can do more than you might think.

II. Einscan Pro 3D scanner:
The only four-in-one 3D scanner line is the Einscan Pro. It uses two technologies, structured light and laser, and offers three modes in one scanner: handheld, tripod-mounted and automatic.
On top of that, the Einscan Pro can scan people, including yourself, and create full-color 3D data.

III. Eascan D 3D scanner – Reverse engineering:
The Eascan D is built for scanning molds, mechanical parts and art pieces. It delivers high accuracy and sharp detail. Its 3D scan data processing (reverse engineering) is many times better than other scanners in the same segment and price range.
Its heavy-duty stand also helps a lot when scanning complex parts with many recesses and undercuts…

IN SHORT:
With a budget of about $20,000, the Eascan D gets you the best reverse engineering 3D scanner around. With about $6,000, you can own the Einscan Pro and its great mobility. And at about $3,000, the Einscan S is your only real choice on the market, because you will hardly find a more useful and convenient 3D scanner.

Three common types of 3D scanners and how to tell them apart
There are many 3D scanner brands and models, but by how they are used they fall into three main groups. Knowing each group helps you pick the right tool for the job instead of just comparing prices.
| Type | Characteristics | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed scanners (desktop, tripod) | Stay in place, often with a turntable; high, stable accuracy and resolution | Small and medium mechanical parts, molds, jewelry, dental |
| Handheld scanners | Move freely around the object, align using markers or geometric features | Large objects, on-site scanning, car bodies, statues, people |
| Multi-purpose (hybrid) | Switch between fixed, handheld and automatic modes | Businesses that scan many different kinds of objects |
How 3D scanners support reverse engineering and mold design
In the plastics and mold industry, 3D scanners are often used to capture a sample part. Engineers then rebuild the CAD model and design the mold. The basic workflow is: scan every side of the part, process the mesh, identify reference surfaces and build surfaces in reverse engineering software, check the deviation between the CAD model and the scan data, and only then move on to mold design. For wooden furniture, bronze pieces or art products, the scan data is often used directly for CNC programming or to 3D print the master model.
Keep in mind that hardware is only half the story. Data processing software, experience scanning difficult surfaces (shiny, dark, deep cavities) and reverse engineering skills are what decide the final output quality.
Tips before investing in a 3D scanner
- Bring a real part for a test scan to judge detail and speed.
- Check that the bundled software exports the formats you need (STL, OBJ, PLY) and whether you need to buy reverse engineering software.
- Ask about the warranty, periodic calibration and user training.
- Check the computer specs you need, since processing scan data is demanding.
If you only need scanning now and then, a 3D scanning service is a cost-effective way to get quality data without buying equipment.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose a fixed or a handheld 3D scanner?
If you mainly scan small and medium parts and need stable accuracy, choose a fixed scanner with a turntable. If you often scan large objects or need to take the scanner on site, a handheld scanner is the better fit.
Can a 3D scanner be used to design molds for plastic parts?
Yes. The scan data is the basis for reverse engineering a CAD model, and the mold is designed from that model. Avoid designing the mold directly on mesh data, because it is hard to control the parting surface and draft angles.
Do I need extra software when I buy a 3D scanner?
The bundled software is usually enough to scan, align and export a mesh. If you need to build parametric CAD from scan data or run in-depth deviation analysis, you will usually need reverse engineering or 3D inspection software as well.
Can a 3D scanner scan people?
Many handheld scanners can scan people, but the person must stay still and the scanner must be fast enough. For portraits or full-body scans, a scanner with color capture gives more lifelike results.
