3D printers have become one of the most talked-about topics in science and technology. For rapid prototyping, a 3D printer is a reliable choice. And it goes further than that: 3D printing is now used in medicine, defense, aerospace and fashion, and printed parts are being used just like parts made by traditional machining. TODAY’S 3D PRINTING TECHNOLOGIES
- SolidWorks Training for Furniture – Online SolidWorks Course
- Large-format 3D printers – 3D printing service in Ho Chi Minh City
- FDM 3D printing:
FDM is the most widely used technology today. Its main strengths:
– Low machine prices, easy to invest in.
– Easy to operate and repair.
– Cheap materials.
- SLA 3D printing:
SLA stands out for these features:
– Rapid prototyping of large and very large parts.
– Smooth, clean surfaces, even on the most complex details.
On the other hand:
– SLA 3D printers are fairly expensive.
– Materials are far from cheap.
– Machines are imported, since no one manufactures them in Vietnam yet.
- SLS, SLM and other 3D printing technologies These technologies are not yet common in Vietnam. We will cover them in a separate article.

Other industrial 3D printing technologies: SLS, MJF, SLM and DLP
Besides FDM and SLA, several other 3D printing technologies are now widely used in production. Each has its own working principle, materials and strengths:
| Technology | Principle | Main materials | Strengths |
|---|---|---|---|
| SLS | A laser sinters plastic powder layer by layer | Nylon PA11, PA12 | Strong parts, no supports needed, handles complex shapes |
| MJF | A binding agent is jetted onto plastic powder, then fused with heat | PA12, PA11, TPU | Consistent mechanical properties, good for small-batch production |
| SLM / DMLS | A laser fully melts metal powder | Stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, alloys | Complex metal parts, conformal cooling channels for molds, medical, aerospace |
| DLP / LCD | UV light cures a whole resin layer at once | Photopolymer resin | Very sharp small details, fast for small parts |
| Binder Jetting | Binder is jetted onto powder, color printing possible | Gypsum powder, sand, metal | Color models, sand casting molds |
Choosing a 3D printing technology by use case
- Concept checks and rough prototypes: FDM is fast and economical.
- Display models, smooth surfaces, small details: SLA or DLP give good surface quality.
- Functional plastic parts, assemblies, low-volume production: SLS or MJF with nylon for high strength and stability.
- Complex or weight-reduced metal parts: SLM/DMLS makes sense when traditional machining is difficult or costly.
- Multi-color models: color printing technologies such as binder jetting or multi-material inkjet.
In practice, no single technology is best for every case. Many projects combine several technologies at different stages. For highly complex metal parts such as conformal mold cooling channels or weight-optimized brackets, see our SLM metal 3D printing service to check feasibility.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common 3D printing technology today?
FDM is the most common because the machines and materials are cheap and easy to run. In industry, SLA, SLS, MJF and SLM are also widely used when surface quality and strength requirements are higher.
Can metal 3D printing replace CNC machining?
Not completely. The two complement each other. Metal 3D printing is strong at complex shapes and low volumes, while CNC is still more efficient for simple geometry and very tight tolerances. Many metal printed parts still need CNC finishing on mating surfaces.
Can full-color 3D printing replace 2D photos?
Color 3D prints give a more tangible experience than 2D photos for architectural models, portrait figurines and medical models. Still, color accuracy and cost need to be weighed for each application.
Why does the same file cost different amounts with different technologies?
Each technology has different material prices, machine time and post-processing. For example, resin prints need washing and UV curing, and metal prints need heat treatment and removal from the build plate, so they cost more than FDM.
How can I get advice on choosing the right 3D printing technology?
Contact CT3D via Hotline/Zalo 0975 008 728 or email contact@ct3dgroup.com. Send your file or a description of the product and how it will be used, and we will recommend a suitable technology and material.
