- Making one-off parts cost-effectively:
So where can you get metal 3D printing?
Metal 3D printing has existed around the world for quite a while. Today the United States, Germany, Japan and China lead the field.
But metal 3D printers are very expensive and out of reach for most businesses. That makes a 3D printing service the best option for companies right now.

How does metal 3D printing work?
The most common metal 3D printing technology today is laser powder bed fusion, usually called SLM or DMLS. The machine spreads a very thin layer of metal powder. A laser scans and melts the powder along the exact cross-section of the part at that layer. The build plate then lowers and a new layer is spread. This repeats thousands of times until the part is finished. The whole process usually runs in an inert gas chamber to keep the metal from oxidizing.
When should you choose metal 3D printing over traditional machining?
Metal 3D printing does not fully replace CNC machining or casting. It shines in these cases:
- Parts with internal cooling channels, hollow sections or lightweight lattices that CNC cannot make.
- One-off or low-volume production where a casting mold is not worth the cost.
- Combining several assembled parts into one piece, cutting down on welds and joints.
- Hard-to-find spare parts that need to be made quickly from a reverse-engineered file.
- Medical and dental devices customized for each patient.
Materials and post-processing
| Common material | Key features |
|---|---|
| Stainless steel | Corrosion resistant, versatile, widely used for mechanical parts |
| Aluminum alloy | Light, good thermal conductivity, suited for heat sink parts |
| Titanium alloy | Light, strong, biocompatible, used in medical and aerospace |
| Tool steel | Hard, wear resistant, used for mold components |
After printing, parts usually need to be cut from the build plate, have supports removed, and be heat treated to relieve stress. Mating surfaces that need high accuracy may be CNC machined afterward. The printed surface has some roughness, so polishing or sandblasting is needed for a smooth finish.

Frequently asked questions
Are metal 3D printed parts as strong as CNC machined parts?
With the right material and process, metal 3D printed parts can reach mechanical properties equal or close to cast or forged parts of the same material after heat treatment. Strength still depends on print orientation, part density and post-processing.
Is metal 3D printing accurate?
Metal 3D printing gives good accuracy on overall shape, but mating surfaces, threaded holes and tight tolerances usually need CNC machining after printing to meet spec.
Why is metal 3D printing usually expensive?
The cost comes from specialized metal powder, expensive machines, inert gas, long print times and post-processing steps such as plate removal, heat treatment and re-machining. That is why metal 3D printing pays off most for complex parts or small quantities.
What files do I need to order metal 3D printing?
Send a 3D file in STEP or STL format, along with the material you want, quantity, which surfaces need high accuracy and your finish requirements. The print shop will check printability, suggest a build orientation and adjust the design if needed.
