3D technology, 3D scanners, 3D printers and more support many different industries:
As we know, most manufacturing and machining shops in Vietnam are small businesses with limited budgets for product research and development. Using 3D scanning helps them save time, cut costs and improve product quality. 3D technology can be applied in many industries, such as mold making, household goods, mechanical products, woodworking and every other industrial sector.
3D scanning is the process of capturing the surface shape of an object in three dimensions to create a digital 3D model. 3D scanning has been a turning point in 3D technology: any physical object in the world can be turned into digital data in just a few hours.
Here are the specific benefits of 3D scanning:
Reverse engineering
The first application of 3D scanning is reverse engineering. From a physical sample, 3D scanning accurately recreates the model on the computer. Once the model is on the computer, the engineer uses reverse engineering software (CATIA, NX…) to redesign and modify it as required, then exports a 3D file (IGS, STEP…) that can go straight to CNC machining.

A mold maker told us:
– Some customers bring in very difficult mold samples and ask us to redesign them, but manual measuring tools simply can’t measure parts like that. With this 3D technology, we just scan the sample, then one person redesigns it from the scan and exports a 3D file. It saves a lot of time and effort, and the results are accurate and reliable.
Product measurement and inspection
3D scanning is a powerful aid for 3D inspection, so measurement and product inspection deserve a mention. After production, products must pass quality and specification checks before going to market. For products with complex surfaces (especially mechanical parts, electronics and circuit boards) that need high accuracy, 3D scanning makes this step faster and more reliable.

Once the sample is scanned, you have a 3D file of the actual product. The engineer can overlay the design file (CAD file) on the scan (the actual product). The inspector can then compare surface deviation between the actual part and the design, measure and check GD&T differences, and check circle diameters, dimensions and distances.
This works for difficult products with thousands of features to inspect, where a CMM system can’t reach.

FAQ
Can a 3D scanner replace a CMM?
Not entirely; they complement each other. A CMM measures point by point by contact with very high accuracy on key dimensions, while a 3D scanner captures the whole surface quickly, which suits freeform profiles and complex parts.
How accurate are 3D scanners used in mold making?
It depends on the model; industrial scanners typically reach accuracy of a few hundredths of a millimeter. When choosing a scanner or service, compare it with the part’s required tolerance to make sure it fits.
How long does reverse engineering from 3D scan data take?
It depends on the part’s complexity and the required output. Parts with basic geometry are usually quick, while parts with many freeform surfaces that need a fully parametric model take longer.
What does 3D inspection with a scanner deliver?
Results usually include a color deviation map between the actual part and the CAD model, measurements at sections, dimensions, diameters and other required geometric values, compiled into a report.
What should I prepare before bringing a mold or part for 3D scanning?
Clean off oil, grease and dust; provide drawings or CAD files if you need a comparison; and note the critical dimensions and how the data will be used. Contact CT3D via Hotline/Zalo 0975 008 728 or contact@ct3dgroup.com for advice.
