Hirschtick used 1 million dollars he had made as a member of the MIT Blackjack Team to start the company.[5] Based first in Waltham, Massachusetts, USA, Hirschtick hired a team of engineers to build 3D CAD software that was easy to use, affordable and able to run on a Windows desktop. Later based in Concord, Massachusetts, SolidWorks released its first version, SolidWorks 95, in 1995.[6][7] In 1997 Dassault, best known for its CATIA software, bought SolidWorks for 310 million dollars in stock.[6]
