How polyresin and nano stone statues are made
Catholic statues in polyresin or nano stone are both made by mold casting. This lets the workshop make many identical pieces while keeping every detail of the master model. The basic process usually looks like this:
- Make the master model: an artisan sculpts it in clay, or it is modeled in 3D on a computer and 3D printed for an accurate master.
- Make the silicone mold: silicone is coated over the master and backed with a rigid shell so the mold keeps its shape.
- Cast: a mix of resin and stone powder is poured into the mold, left to cure, then demolded.
- Finish by hand: trim flash lines, sand, and fill air holes.
- Hand-paint: prime, paint skin tones, robes and trim patterns, then apply a protective coat.
Painting is what gives a statue its character. The classic realistic style calls for soft color transitions on the face, eyes with depth, and robe folds with clear light and shadow.
Using 3D technology to scale statues up or down
When one statue design needs to come in several sizes, 3D technology saves a lot of time compared with resculpting by hand. An existing statue is 3D scanned to digitize it, details are cleaned up in software, and then it is scaled up or down. Small statues can be 3D printed directly as the master. Large ones are split into sections for printing, or CNC cut from foam as a core. The workshop then makes molds from this master and casts in batches. If you need a statue made from your own design, see our polyresin statue production service for advice on the full process from model to finished piece.
Quick comparison: polyresin, nano stone and composite
| Material | Properties | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Polyresin | Captures fine detail, smooth surface, easy to paint | Small and medium indoor statues |
| Nano stone (resin mixed with stone powder) | Heavy in the hand, feels like stone, hard and solid | Display statues that need a premium look |
| Composite (fiberglass) | Light, durable, better weather resistance with the right coating | Large statues placed outdoors |
Frequently asked questions
Can polyresin statues be placed outdoors?
For short periods, yes, but long exposure to direct sun and rain is not recommended. UV light and moisture can fade the paint. For outdoor statues, use composite or add a UV-resistant protective coating.
How do I clean a painted Catholic statue without damaging the paint?
Dust it regularly with a soft brush or a soft dry cloth. Avoid strong cleaning chemicals, alcohol, or scrubbing the painted surface hard with a wet cloth.
Can I order a statue from my own design?
Yes. From photos or an existing statue, the workshop sculpts or 3D scans it, builds the master model, makes the mold, then casts and paints it to your size and color requirements.
How is a nano stone statue different from a natural stone statue?
Nano stone statues are cast from a mix of resin and stone powder, so they are lighter, cheaper and easy to reproduce in detail. Natural stone statues are carved from a single block. They are heavier and more durable but take longer to make and cost much more.
