Low-cost 3D printers are helping bronze casters make rapid prototypes, saving a lot of money and time compared with traditional hand-made patterns. https://youtu.be/rYMHlFKeRF8
Technology:
3D technology is now widely used, including 3D scanners, 3D printers and design software. The 3D scanner used in bronze statue casting is the handheld 3D scanner, because it is so convenient for scanning 4D statue models. It scans fast and delivers the accuracy the job needs. In our work, we have found that the following handheld scanners produce output good enough for 3D printing:- Drake extra-large handheld 3D scanner.
- Thor3D handheld 3D scanner.
- Freescan X3 handheld 3D scanner.
- Einscan Pro + handheld 3D scanner
- Einscan Pro handheld 3D scanner.
- Metal 3D printers:
- SLA 3D printers:
- Cubicon Single Plus 3D printer:
- Cubicon Style 3D printer:
- Skytech large-format 3D printer:
- 3D Vietnam large-format 3D printer.
Results
- Saves 23-40% of pattern-making costs compared with hand work.
- Saves 80% of the time compared with hand work.
- Produces a 100% accurate copy of the model, whether small or large.

Bronze casting workflow with 3D printing and 3D scanning
In traditional bronze statue casting, artisans sculpt the model in clay or plaster by hand, and scaling it up or adjusting proportions takes a lot of work. With 3D technology, the workflow changes like this:
- Digitize the model: 3D scan an existing model, or build a 3D model from a sketch or reference photos.
- Edit on the computer: scale up or down, compensate for metal shrinkage, and hollow the model to use less bronze.
- Make the master pattern: 3D print it in plastic or resin; large statues can be split into sections or combined with foam CNC.
- Finish the pattern: sand, fill and refine details so the master has the surface quality you want.
- Mold and cast: make a silicone mold from the master to pour wax patterns, then build a heat-resistant shell and cast bronze by the lost-wax method; or use the master to make a sand mold.
Hand-made patterns vs. 3D printed patterns
| Criteria | Hand-sculpted pattern | 3D printed pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Match to the original | Depends on the artisan’s skill | Follows the digital data closely, repeatable |
| Scaling up or down | Must be re-sculpted, easy to get proportions wrong | Changed on the computer, proportions stay correct |
| Changing details | Add or carve material directly on the pattern | Edit the file, reprint only the part that changes |
| Artistic value | Carries the artisan’s personal touch | Still needs an artisan to finish the surface and fine details |
3D technology does not replace artisans. It takes over the repetitive, tiring steps so they can focus on the creative work and finishing.
The role of silicone molds in bronze casting
A silicone mold lets you copy a 3D printed master into many identical wax patterns, which is essential when casting several copies of one design. Flexible silicone lets you release wax patterns with undercuts and deep recesses without damaging details. When you are getting ready for a production run, see our silicone mold making service from 3D printed patterns to get a mold that suits your casting material.
Frequently asked questions
Can a plastic 3D printed pattern go straight into a bronze casting furnace?
Standard FDM plastic is usually not burned out directly because it can leave ash and gas. The common approach is to use the 3D print as a master for a silicone mold and then pour wax, or to print in a dedicated castable resin that burns out cleanly.
Why do bronze casting patterns need shrinkage compensation?
Bronze shrinks as it cools from the molten state, so the cast part comes out slightly smaller than the pattern. The pattern must be scaled up by a shrinkage allowance so the final part reaches the target size.
Can a large bronze statue pattern be 3D printed in one piece?
Large statues are usually split into several sections for printing, or combined with foam CNC, then joined. During casting, the sections are also usually cast separately, then welded together and the seams finished.
Does bronze cast from a 3D printed pattern keep fine details?
Yes, if the master is printed at a high enough resolution and the silicone mold and shell are made carefully. Very thin details should be made slightly thicker so the metal fills them well during casting.
