What jobs is a handheld laser 3D scanner good for?
A handheld laser scanner projects several laser lines onto the surface of an object, and its cameras record the shape of those lines to calculate point coordinates. The big advantages of this technology are that ambient light has little effect on it, it can scan many kinds of surfaces, and it handles large objects, even out in the field. The trade-off is that the scanner usually needs reference markers stuck on the part for positioning.
Typical jobs for a handheld laser scanner:
- Scanning large wood pieces such as statues, columns and big relief panels to send to CNC.
- Scanning molds, castings and large housings for reverse engineering.
- Scanning car bodies, boat hulls and industrial components on the factory floor.
- Checking structural deformation, welds and machined parts.
Laser vs. structured light for scanning wood models
| Criteria | Handheld laser | Structured light |
|---|---|---|
| Effect of ambient light | Low | Higher, needs stable conditions |
| Dark, shiny surfaces | Handled better | Often needs scanning spray |
| Reference markers | Usually required | May not be needed on detailed objects |
| Large objects | Very well suited | Moderately suited |
Tips for getting good results when scanning wood models
With carved wood, you need to balance scan speed and resolution. Deep carved areas should be scanned slowly and from several angles so you don’t miss data at the bottom of the grooves. Stick the markers on flat areas with little detail so they don’t cover the pattern. After scanning, clean up the noise and fill holes carefully before moving to CAM software. If you skip this step, the CNC tool may cut wrong in areas with missing data.
Woodshops that need to digitize large pieces but haven’t invested in equipment yet can use CT3D’s on-site 3D scanning service. Call or Zalo 0975 008 728 for advice on the right scanning approach for your part size.
Frequently asked questions
Are handheld laser scanners safe for the eyes?
Commercial laser 3D scanners usually use eye-safe laser classes when operated according to the instructions. Even so, avoid looking directly into the source and don’t point it at other people’s eyes while scanning.
Why does a laser scanner need reference markers?
Markers help the scanner work out its position in space as it moves around the object, so it can stitch the data together accurately. On large objects, markers also reduce error that builds up over the length of the part.
How long does it take to scan a large wood piece with a laser scanner?
It depends on the size and how complex the carving is. A medium-sized relief or statue can usually be scanned in a few hours, and post-processing may take extra time depending on how finished the model needs to be.
Is laser scan data detailed enough for fine carving?
For medium and large patterns it’s usually enough. For very fine details like strands of hair or thin leaf veins, do an extra pass in high-resolution mode or use a high-resolution structured light scanner for that area.
