EinScan Pro Plus is a versatile 3D scanner used in many fields: woodworking, mechanical engineering, fine arts, advertising and more. A recent video shows the EinScan Pro Plus scanning a V8 engine, and the results are impressive.
EinScan Pro Plus in use:
These photos were provided by the 3D Vietnam team, taken during on-site 3D scanning at a customer’s company. A project like this needs solid knowledge of 3D scanning and design to be done well and fast.
The engine is very heavy, so a crane was used to lift it to a set height to scan the underside. The part has to be held firmly so it does not swing or shake, which would cause errors in the data.
Congratulations to the 3D Vietnam team on a successful project with the EinScan Pro Plus 3D scanner.

This is a handheld device, so it is very easy to use: just hold the scanner (0.8 kg) and move it around to the angles not yet captured. The scan data updates live on the computer screen running the 3D scanning software.3D printer information:

Tips for 3D scanning engines and large mechanical assemblies
Engines are among the hardest objects to scan: they are heavy, full of deep cavities, have shiny or oily metal surfaces, and countless small parts such as bolts, hoses and brackets. To get a complete data set accurate enough for design work, technicians usually follow these rules:
- Clean and prepare the surface: wipe off oil and grease, and apply matte powder to shiny metal areas so the scanner reads the light consistently.
- Fix the object firmly: when the engine must be lifted to scan the underside, hang or support it so it cannot swing. Even a small shift between scans throws off the alignment.
- Use more reference markers on flat areas: large flat faces have few geometric features, so they misalign easily without enough markers.
- Scan in zones: do an overall scan with a large field of view first, then add the cavities, flanges and mounting holes at higher resolution.
- Check the data on site: review it live in the software to catch missing areas before leaving.
What is engine scan data used for?
| Purpose | How the data is used |
|---|---|
| Engine bay and chassis design | The scan mesh serves as a spatial reference for placing brackets, hoses and covers |
| Making accessories, flanges and mounts | CAD is built at the mating locations so new parts fit exactly |
| Restoring damaged parts | Covers, caps and intake necks are reverse engineered from the real part, then machined or recast |
| Training, display, simulation | A digital model is created for technical documentation or 3D printed as a scale model |
The key point is that most of the value lies in post-scan processing. The STL mesh needs cleaning and coordinate alignment, and parts meant for production must be rebuilt as solid CAD models. For projects like this, companies can look at our reverse engineering service for mechanical parts to get CAD files ready for machining.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to 3D scan an engine?
The scanning itself usually takes from a few hours to one working day, depending on size and the level of detail needed. Data processing and CAD modeling afterward usually take longer than the scan.
Does the engine need to be taken apart before 3D scanning?
Not necessarily. If you only need the envelope and mounting positions, the whole assembly can be scanned. If you need to redesign a specific part, removing that part gives more complete and accurate data.
Is a handheld 3D scanner accurate enough to design accessories that mount on an engine?
Usually yes, for most accessories such as brackets, covers and hoses. For tight-fit mating points, also measure with mechanical gauges and build the CAD to nominal dimensions.
Does an oily surface affect scan results?
Yes. Oil and grease cause reflections and make the powder coat uneven, leading to noise or holes in the data. Clean the surface thoroughly before scanning.
