Common types of FDM 3D printed products in practice
A desktop FDM 3D printer can make many kinds of products, but it works best for applications that suit the nature of filament extrusion technology:
| Product group | Examples | Common materials |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering prototypes | Device housings, gears, couplings, assembly parts | ABS, PETG |
| Jigs, fixtures and production aids | Inspection jigs, brackets, guide rails | ABS, PETG, nylon |
| Educational models | Geometric models, machine mechanisms, biology models | PLA |
| Art and gifts | Small figurines, decorations, keychains, character models | PLA, specialty-color PLA |
| Flexible parts | Protective covers, pads, gaskets, straps | TPU |
| Medical and dental aids | Jaw models, reference models before treatment | PLA, ABS |
How can you make FDM prints look better and last longer?
FDM print quality depends not only on the machine but also on how you prepare the file and set up the print. A few practical tips:
- Choose the right layer height: thin layers give smoother surfaces but take longer; thick layers suit large models with little detail.
- Pick a sensible print orientation: keep visible faces away from supports; orient load-bearing parts so the force runs parallel to the layers.
- Adjust infill density: display models can use low infill; load-bearing parts need more infill and more outer shells.
- Control temperature: ABS needs an enclosed chamber and no drafts; PLA needs good cooling fans for sharp edges.
- Post-processing: sanding, priming and painting hide layer lines and lift the look of display pieces.
When should you switch to another technology?
FDM has limits on surface smoothness and very fine detail. For jewelry models, highly detailed figurines or mold patterns that need a smooth finish, resin printing is usually the better choice. For medium runs of assembly parts that need consistent mechanical properties, powder-based technologies such as SLS or MJF are a good fit. If you’re not sure which technology suits your product, send us your file for advice through our custom 3D printing service.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to FDM print a part?
Print time depends on size, layer height, infill density and machine speed, from a few dozen minutes for a small keychain to many hours or even several days for a large model. Lowering infill and increasing layer height are common ways to cut print time.
Can FDM 3D printed parts be used as toys for children?
Yes, but choose a safe material such as PLA and a design without small parts that can be swallowed or sharp edges. Smooth the surface to avoid plastic flakes, and use child-safe paint if you need color.
Can a single-nozzle FDM printer print multiple colors?
You can change color layer by layer by pausing and swapping filament at a set height. To mix several colors within the same layer, you need a multi-nozzle printer or an automatic filament changer.
Can FDM printed parts handle high temperatures?
PLA starts to soften at a fairly low temperature, so it is not suitable for use in a car or near a heat source. ABS, PETG, ASA or nylon handle heat better and are often used for parts that work in hot environments.
