As we know, a 3D scanner for wood is a 3D scanner with many integrated features that make it effective, both in output quality and in cost, for 3D scanning wooden handicraft products.
Wood CNC (also called wood carving) runs smoothly when we already have a 3D model of the part to be machined. So how is that 3D model created? Today, 3D wood models are sold and traded freely on the market and on social media, but these are common designs with nothing unique or exclusive about them. To create an exclusive design, a JDPaint or ZBrush designer has to spend anywhere from a few days to a few months building the 3D model, depending on the difficulty and size of each design. A more direct way is to have an artisan carve the piece by hand, then use a 3D scanner for wood to capture its 3D shape. The scan data is then used to run the wood CNC machine (wood carving machine).
How can a 3D scanner for wood help Vietnam’s wood industry:
- A 3D scanner for wood captures 3D data of any wood product a carving workshop wants, quickly.
- A 3D scanner for wood makes it easy to scale designs up or down, as the user wants.
- A 3D scanner for wood can scan the human body, so carving workshops can carve a wooden statue of anyone who wants one. This is a fairly new direction that brings very high economic value to the wood carving industry.

Very complex products – with a 3D scanner for wood, the job becomes many times easier
Many kinds of 3D scanners on the market can be used in the wood industry. Here are some examples to help you choose:
- High-end 3D scanners: High-end 3D scanners usually come from countries with highly developed industries, such as Germany, the US and Russia. These scanners offer high quality and near-perfect accuracy. They are usually used in mechanical workshops and large, multinational or foreign-invested (FDI) woodworking companies, because the initial investment is quite large.
- Mid-range 3D scanners: Mid-range 3D scanners are usually made in Asia. They cost many times less than high-end scanners, yet cover what Vietnamese companies need: reverse engineering, 3D scanning of wood, handicrafts, statues… Right now, the EinScan Pro is a popular choice in Vietnam, with more than 50 units sold in its first 2 months on the Vietnamese market.

Frequently asked questions
Can 3D scan data of wood products go straight to a CNC machine?
It usually needs processing first: clean the mesh, patch holes, and adjust orientation and size, then bring it into CNC programming software such as JDPaint or ArtCAM to create toolpaths. This step determines how sharp the carved product will be.
Can 3D scanning help scale carving designs up or down?
Yes. A digital model can be rescaled as needed while keeping its original shape. When scaling up a lot, small details may need extra work; when scaling down, check that details are still large enough for the CNC tool to machine.
Can dark or polished wood surfaces be scanned?
Dark wood and shiny surfaces easily cause noise or missing data. You can adjust the scanner’s brightness, or apply a thin anti-glare powder to get complete data, then wipe it off after scanning.
Can people be 3D scanned to carve wooden statues?
Yes. A handheld scanner can capture a portrait or full body. The data is then processed, with the pose and scale adjusted, to program the CNC for rough carving, and an artisan finishes the final details.
Should a small woodworking shop buy a 3D scanner or hire a service?
If new designs come up often, owning a scanner gives you control. If you only need scanning from time to time, hiring a scanning and data processing service is cheaper. Contact CT3D via Hotline/Zalo 0975 008 728 for advice.
