Atos Core 3D scanner – Germany – accuracy up to 5/1000 mm
Depending on the needs of each industry, you choose a 3D scanner that fits the job. We group common 3D scanners into 3 types:
Handheld 3D scanners (for large products that don’t need very high accuracy):
3D scanners for mechanical engineering and molds (reverse engineering, mold design, scaling for rapid prototyping):
- EinScan Pro 3D scanner, tripod version with automatic turntable.
- Eascan D 3D scanner.
- Optimscan 3M 3D scanner.
- Optimscan 5M 3D scanner.
3D scanners for 3D inspection:
- 3D inspection scanners.

3D scanner applications in mechanical engineering and molds
In mechanical engineering, a 3D scanner is not just for “copying” parts. It supports the whole process from design and manufacturing to quality control. Typical applications:
- Mold design from a physical sample: scan the sample product, build the CAD, then design injection, casting or stamping molds.
- Repairing and reworking old molds: digitize worn molds or molds with no drawings, so they can be weld-repaired and re-machined to the correct profile.
- First article inspection: compare trial parts with the design file before mass production.
- Warpage and shrinkage analysis: measure deviation after injection molding, casting or welding to adjust the mold and process settings.
- Making spare parts: rebuild imported machine parts that are no longer available.
Accuracy requirements by application
Not every job needs the most accurate scanner. Choosing the right accuracy level saves cost and time:
| Application | Required accuracy | Typical scanner |
|---|---|---|
| Display models, fine art | Low to medium | Fast handheld scanner |
| Reverse engineering mechanical parts | Medium to high | Tripod scanner, handheld scanner with markers |
| Mold design and repair | High | Industrial blue-light scanner |
| 3D inspection, quality acceptance | Very high, needs periodic calibration | Dedicated metrology scanner |
For quality control, the scan is usually overlaid on the original CAD file to create a color deviation map. Engineers can see out-of-tolerance areas right away instead of measuring point by point with hand tools. If you need to check deviation on products or molds, see our 3D inspection service for mechanical engineering.
Frequently asked questions
Can a 3D scanner replace a CMM in a machine shop?
Not completely. A 3D scanner is great at capturing the whole surface quickly and visually, while a contact CMM still has the edge for precise geometric dimensions such as hole diameter and concentricity. The two usually complement each other.
Can shiny metal parts be scanned directly?
They usually need a thin coat of matte powder before scanning. Some laser or blue-light scanners handle metal surfaces better, but a matte coating still gives cleaner, more stable data.
Does a large, heavy mold need to come off the press to be scanned?
Not necessarily. A handheld scanner can scan the mold right in the shop, or even while it is mounted on the machine, as long as there is enough room to work and the mold surface is clean.
Can scan data be used directly for CNC programming?
For freeform surfaces such as art molds, the processed mesh can be used for programming. For mechanical parts that need accuracy, rebuild the CAD first so you have proper surfaces for machining.
