3D Vietnams grew out of the 3D Tech center, one of the longest-running 3D technology companies in Vietnam. We work with 3D scanners, 3D printers, 3D scanning and 3D printing services, and offer 3D scan data processing training in Ho Chi Minh City.
3D scan data:
3D scan data is mesh data (STL, OBJ and so on). Processing it means repairing the STL or OBJ mesh. The steps themselves are fairly simple.
Training in 3D scan data processing (3D file processing) depends on several factors:
- The scan data: accurate, high-resolution scan data makes reverse engineering, also called scan data processing, easier and more accurate.
- The trainer or the person doing the work must understand molds, parting surfaces and other factors to remove every error that could show up during CNC machining or mold making and affect injection molding.
- Other knowledge, such as mold design and machining, is also needed to produce high-quality processed scan data.
Where can you learn to process 3D scan data?
Many companies teach reverse engineering (design, 3D scan data processing, 3D scan file processing and more). Our details are below. Call now!

The 3D scan data workflow from mesh to CAD file
Raw scan data cannot be used right away for machining or design. The person processing it has to go through a series of steps, and each one takes its own skills:
- Clean the point cloud and mesh: remove noise, background and turntable data, and merge the scans.
- Repair the mesh: fill holes, smooth noisy areas, fix bad triangles, and make the mesh watertight if it will be 3D printed.
- Align the coordinate system: place the model on sensible axes based on datum planes and symmetry axes. This step is key to accurate reverse engineering.
- Extract features: detect planes, cylinders, cones and freeform surfaces, and take cross-section profiles.
- Build the CAD model: create parametric solids for regular geometry and surfaces for freeform areas, then check the deviation against the scan data.
- Export the file: STEP, IGES or the native CAD format for mold design and CNC machining.
Skills you need to learn 3D scan data processing
- CAD basics: be fluent in at least one mechanical design program for solids, surfaces and assemblies.
- Understand tolerances and design intent: real parts always have manufacturing errors, so you must tell apart what is error and what is the original design shape.
- Mold knowledge: draft angles, parting surfaces and wall thickness help make the reverse-engineered file ready for mold making.
- Machining knowledge: know whether the part will be milled, turned or cast so the model suits the manufacturing method.
- A habit of checking: always compare the CAD model with the scan mesh using a deviation map before handing it over.
Learning to process scan data takes time and practice on many kinds of parts. For projects that need results now, companies can use a reverse engineering service based on 3D scan data to get CAD files ready for production.
Frequently asked questions
Are 3D scan data processing and reverse engineering the same thing?
Not quite. Data processing usually means cleaning and repairing the mesh for 3D printing or archiving. Reverse engineering is the next step: rebuilding a parametric CAD model from the scan data so it can be edited and manufactured.
Can someone without CAD skills learn 3D scan data processing?
You can learn basic cleaning and mesh repair, but professional reverse engineering requires a CAD background. Learn CAD first or alongside it to progress faster.
Why does reverse engineering require mold knowledge?
Many parts are scanned to remake injection or casting molds. If the model lacks draft angles or has a poor parting surface, the mold will be hard to machine and the molded parts will often have defects.
Does poor scan quality affect reverse engineering?
Yes. Noisy data, missing areas or low resolution make features hard to detect and reduce accuracy. Scan quality is the foundation of the whole process.
How can I get advice on scan data processing or reverse engineering?
Contact CT3D via Hotline/Zalo 0975 008 728 or email contact@ct3dgroup.com. Describe the part and how you will use it, and we will suggest a suitable approach.
