FDM, resin and SLA 3D printing: a quick comparison
When you order 3D printing in Ho Chi Minh City, the first question is usually which technology to choose. Each one has its own strengths, and picking the right one from the start saves a lot of time and post-processing cost.
| Criteria | FDM (filament) | Resin (MSLA/DLP) | Large-format SLA |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it works | Extrudes melted plastic filament layer by layer | UV light cures liquid resin one layer at a time | A laser scans and cures liquid resin |
| Surface | Visible layer lines; needs sanding for a smooth look | Very smooth, with sharp fine details | Smooth and consistent on large parts |
| Common materials | PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU, engineering plastics | Standard resin, flexible resin, heat-resistant resin | Engineering resin, clear resin |
| Best for | Jigs, fixtures, enclosures, functional parts, large low-cost models | Figurines, jewelry, small detailed parts | Product prototypes, mold masters, display models |
In short: if you need mechanical strength and low cost, go with FDM. If you need fine detail and a nice surface, choose resin or SLA. If you are not sure, describe what the part will be used for and our engineers will suggest the best option.
How to order custom 3D printing at our workshop
A typical 3D printing order goes through these steps:
- Send your file or idea: STL, STEP and OBJ are the most common formats. If you only have a hand sketch, a photo or a physical sample, we do 3D design or 3D scanning first.
- File check: we look for mesh errors, wall thickness, overhangs that need support, and fit tolerances.
- Quote and material selection: cost depends on volume, machine time, material and finish level.
- Printing and post-processing: support removal, washing and UV curing (for resin), sanding, priming and painting if required.
- Inspection and delivery: we check dimensions and appearance before handing over.

File prep tips for fast, accurate prints
Rush orders are often delayed because the file is not ready. A few tips to save time:
- Export files in millimeters and double-check the scale before sending.
- Keep the thinnest walls at about 1–2 mm for FDM. Resin can go thinner, but thin parts break easily when supports are removed.
- Leave clearance for parts that fit together, usually about 0.2–0.4 mm depending on the technology.
- Mark which surfaces need to look good so the workshop can orient the print and keep supports off important faces.
Frequently asked questions
Can you 3D print from just a photo or a physical sample, without a 3D file?
Yes. For a physical sample, the workshop 3D scans it to capture the surface and turns the data into a print file. For photos or drawings, an engineer builds the 3D model first and then we print it.
Which is stronger, FDM or resin?
FDM parts made from PETG, ABS or engineering plastics usually handle impact and load better than standard resin. Resin gives a nicer surface and sharper detail but is more brittle, unless you use a special engineering resin.
What determines the price of 3D printing?
The price mainly depends on material volume, machine time, the technology used and how much post-processing is needed, such as sanding and painting. For the same model, printing it hollow or with lower infill costs less than printing it solid.
Can 3D printed parts be painted?
Yes. After printing, parts are usually sanded, primed and then painted in the color you want. Resin and SLA surfaces get smoother more easily, so they suit display models that need a fine finish.
Do you take small batch orders?
Yes. 3D printing is a great fit for small batches of a few dozen to a few hundred parts because no mold is needed. For larger quantities, consider making a silicone mold from a 3D printed master to cast copies and lower the cost per part.
