Using and running a 3D printer is simple, but getting the best results from it is hard for non-experts. Many problems come up while this rapid prototyping machine is running, and the print head and print bed are where they happen most often.
3D PRINTER PROBLEMS – THE PRINT BED
- The part lifts off the bed during printing because the material shrinks when the temperature drops suddenly.
- The bed is uneven due to poor calibration, so the part drifts off the reference axis and peels off.
- And many other factors.
FIXING PRINT BED PROBLEMS
- A bed temperature of 50-60 degrees is the standard for good part adhesion and a clean, high-quality surface. A heated bed means fewer problems during 3D printing. In Vietnam today, two 3D printer models have an AUTOMATIC heated bed: the Style and the Single Plus, both from the Cubicon line, researched, developed and made by HyVISION, a long-established and well-known 3D printer maker in Korea.
- On both models, bed leveling (calibration) is 100% automatic. All you do is press a button and wait for the machine to make your part, quickly and accurately.

Why do a heated bed and bed leveling matter?
On an FDM printer, the first layer largely decides whether the whole print succeeds. If it doesn’t stick firmly and evenly, the part can come loose mid-print, curl at the edges or end up out of dimension. Two factors directly affect the first layer: bed temperature and the gap between the nozzle and the bed surface.
A heated bed keeps the bottom of the part near the plastic’s glass transition temperature, which reduces sudden shrinkage and limits warping. Bed leveling keeps the nozzle gap even across the whole surface: too far and the plastic won’t stick, too close and the nozzle scrapes the bed or clogs. Automatic leveling uses a sensor to measure several points on the bed and compensates for offsets while printing, saving users the time spent leveling by hand.
Reference bed temperatures by material
| Material | Typical bed temperature | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | About 50–60 °C or no heating needed | A bed that is too hot can distort the base of the part |
| PETG | About 70–80 °C | Sticks very firmly; use a release layer on glass beds |
| ABS/ASA | About 90–110 °C | Needs an enclosed chamber to limit warping |
| TPU | About 40–60 °C | Sticks well; remove carefully so the part doesn’t tear |
These values are for reference only. Adjust them to the filament maker’s recommendations and the bed surface you are using.
Quick fixes for common bed adhesion problems
- Part edges lifting: raise the bed temperature, add a brim, block drafts.
- First layer has gaps or lines: the nozzle is too far from the bed; re-level or reduce the Z offset.
- First layer squished and spreading: the nozzle is too close; raise the Z offset slightly.
- Sticks in one corner but not another: the bed is tilted or warped and needs re-leveling.
- Dirty bed: wipe it with alcohol to remove oils from your hands.

Frequently asked questions
Can a 3D printer without a heated bed still print?
Yes. A printer without a heated bed can still print PLA well if the bed surface has suitable adhesion. But with ABS, PETG or large parts, no heated bed easily leads to warping and parts coming loose. If you plan to print many materials, choose a printer with a heated bed.
How often should I level the print bed?
Printers with automatic leveling usually re-measure before every print, so users rarely need to step in. With manual leveling, check again after changing the nozzle, moving the printer or noticing an uneven first layer. Watching the first layer is the simplest way to spot a tilted bed.
Should I use spray adhesive or glue stick on the print bed?
You can when the bed surface has poor adhesion or when printing tricky materials like ABS or nylon. Glue also makes PETG, which sticks too hard to glass, easier to remove. Apply a thin, even layer and clean it off regularly so buildup doesn’t make the bottom surface uneven.
Why do parts warp even with a heated bed?
It is usually caused by the temperature difference between the bottom and top of the part, especially when a fan or air conditioner blows on the printer. Parts with large bases and sharp square corners also warp more easily. Using an enclosure, adding a brim, rounding corners in the design and reducing the cooling fan for the first few layers all help a lot.
