With the oil and gas industry in a slump, thousands of its workers have had to find other jobs to make a living. Many of them are trained oil and gas engineers who, after losing their jobs, had to accept unskilled work. The economy is tough, oil prices have plunged, and every trade tied to oil and gas has stalled. Even so, Vung Tau still sees oil and gas as a hot, high-paying field. Refusing to give in, former oil and gas engineer Ho Trong Hai, born in 1987, decided to start a business with his family’s bun moc recipe, carrying on the trade of the family’s bun moc shop in Saigon. He admits his plan to sell bun moc was quite risky, since he did not know how well it would do. But after careful calculations and planning, he decided to go ahead. Hai chose to open a bun moc shop because it is the dish his family knows best, with a history of more than 20 years.

Seeing how much customers loved his family’s noodle shop, he nurtured the idea of carrying it on. He spent a lot of time watching and learning the family’s cooking process and measuring ingredients to create his own secret recipe. As for the dish itself, a full bowl of bun moc has moc, cha and pork ribs. The moc is made in several ways: raw pork paste rolled into small balls and cooked in the broth, or rolled into balls and fried golden. Besides moc, there is cha lua (pork roll), cha que (cinnamon pork roll) and baby ribs. The broth stands out with a natural, clean sweetness, simmered from pork bones for a rich flavor that suits diners. After choosing a location, fitting out the space, buying equipment and opening the shop, he kept running into new problems. Because he was not yet skilled, preparing the ingredients and broth took him a long time. The hectic work with no one to fill in also clearly wore him down physically. However, the experience he gained from each hardship gradually helped him balance and manage everything. Hai says his business is now doing well. Since opening day, the shop has never fallen into a “financial crisis,” and average customer numbers are estimated to have doubled. Many have become loyal customers who come back several times a week. His goal for next year is to grow and open more branches in the city.

Hai’s customers are used to the sight of the owner serving noodles, always smiling at customers and speaking gently to his staff. Being busy with the business means less time for family and friends, and his health is not as good as before. In return, he has gained a lot from running a business: independence, resilience and decisiveness in both thinking and action. Sometimes Hai feels a little sad that his work leaves him less time to relax than his friends. But since he is set on building his own path, he keeps his eyes on the results, stays firm and does not worry about what others think. On what success means, he says: “A person can only be called successful when they are satisfied in all four areas: finances and career, mind and intellect, health, and social relationships.”
