A multi-color 3D printing project for dental teaching models for the 3M group, produced on the Cometrue T10 multi-color rapid prototyping machine at 3D Vietnams. A top-quality full-color CMYK rapid prototyping system.
How the project was done:
- 3D scanned a denture model at 1:1 scale with human teeth, using an Atos Core 3D scanner (Germany) and an Einscan Pro 3D scanner (Shining 3D – China).
- Processed the scan data, scaled up the model and split it into separate parts as the customer requested.
- 3D printed on the Comtrue T10 rapid prototyping machine (Full Color CMYK).
- Heated the parts after printing to increase hardness, and recovered the 3D printing powder on the TD3 system.

How does multi-color 3D printing work?
Multi-color powder 3D printing builds a part layer by layer. A thin layer of powder is spread across the build bed, and a print head jets a CMYK-tinted binder exactly onto the cross-section of the model. Then the next layer of powder is spread on top. Because color is jetted during printing, the part comes out of the machine in full color, including smooth color gradients that are hard to paint by hand.
After printing, the part is dried, excess powder is cleaned off, and it is usually infiltrated with a strengthening agent to raise hardness and make the colors brighter. Unbound powder can be recovered and reused.
Color models in medical and dental education
Colored teaching models help students clearly tell apart anatomical structures such as enamel, dentin, pulp, gums and jawbone. Making a teaching model usually involves:
- 3D scanning a real sample, or using CT data to capture accurate geometry.
- Data processing: scaling to a size suited for teaching, and splitting into removable parts or cross-sections.
- Color assignment: coloring each anatomical area in software.
- Printing and finishing: printing in color, strengthening the surface, and assembling if there are several parts.
| Color model option | Advantages | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-color 3D printing | Color throughout the part, good color transitions | Teaching models, display models, scale models |
| Single-color 3D printing, then hand painting | More durable, surface can be smoother | Models that are handled a lot |
| Colored resin cast from a silicone mold | Copies in large quantities | Teaching models made in batches |

Frequently asked questions
Are multi-color 3D printed models durable?
Color powder prints work well for display and teaching, but they are more brittle than FDM plastic or resin. Infiltration raises the hardness a lot, but you should still avoid hard knocks.
Are 3D printed colors exactly true to life?
Printed colors are usually very close to the design, but can differ slightly because of the powder material and the infiltration process. If color accuracy matters, print a small test sample to compare first.
Can a tooth model be scaled up for teaching?
Yes. Scan data can be scaled to any ratio you want, which makes small details easy to see in class. Check the wall thickness and stability of the model again after scaling.
What do I need to provide to order a color teaching model?
Provide a real sample or a 3D file, plus the scale you need, how to split the parts, and the color for each area. If you only have a real sample, it can be 3D scanned first to get the data.
