The FreeScan X3 laser 3D scanner is made in China to German (Germany) manufacturing standards. It is a handheld 3D scanner that weighs just 0.8 kg, so it is very easy to move around.
FreeScan X3 Handheld Laser 3D Scanner
The FreeScan X3 has a compact, lightweight handheld design and is highly portable (0.8 kg). It is known for high accuracy, can scan large objects and gives users results they can rely on. In handheld mode it works in many different environments. Whether in tight spaces or outdoors, and regardless of the object’s texture and color (black included), size or complexity, the FreeScan X3 uses a new laser array and high-speed 3D scanning technology.Specifications:
Key features:
- Weighs only 0.8 kg and is very easy to handle.
- Works in harsh conditions: tight spaces or direct sunlight are no problem.
- Handles large parts in a wide range of shapes and sizes.
- Scans black surfaces (other 3D scanners need consumables such as 3D scanning spray).
- High accuracy, and can be combined with a photogrammetry camera for 3D inspection.
Real-world applications:
- The FreeScan X3 can be used in oil and gas, to scan large propellers and inspect systems on drilling rigs.
- The FreeScan X3 3D scanner is also used in shipbuilding.
- Heavy engineering and large castings are another strong area for the FreeScan X3.

3D scanning in heavy industry: oil and gas, shipbuilding, large castings
Heavy industries share one thing: the objects are large, heavy and often can’t be moved to a measurement lab. That is why handheld laser 3D scanners are popular. A technician can bring the device to the job site, the workshop or the drilling rig to capture data.
| Industry | Typical 3D scanning applications |
|---|---|
| Oil and gas | Measuring wear and corrosion on pipes, flanges and valves; capturing data for replacement parts on drilling rigs |
| Shipbuilding and ship repair | Scanning propellers, rudders and hulls to check for deformation or to remake damaged parts |
| Large castings | Comparing castings against the CAD file and checking machining allowance before parts go on the CNC machine |
| Energy and hydropower | Measuring turbine blades and spiral casings to assess wear and plan repairs |
Workflow for scanning large objects
For objects several meters long or more, the error that builds up when you stitch many scans together has to be controlled. A typical workflow:
- Site survey: define the area to measure, the lighting, the working space and safety requirements.
- Set up a reference marker frame: for large objects, a photogrammetry system can be added to build an accurate marker frame that covers the whole object and limits accumulated error.
- Scan by zone: scan each area at a suitable resolution; critical areas such as mating surfaces are scanned in more detail.
- Merge and process data: combine the zones on the marker frame, filter noise and export a mesh file.
- Analysis: compare with the CAD file, take measurements or rebuild the model for manufacturing.
Tips for scanning on industrial sites
Oily or rusty surfaces need reasonable cleaning so the markers stick firmly. High temperatures or vibration from running machinery can affect accuracy, so it is best to scan when equipment is stopped. Follow the safety rules of the work area, especially on drilling rigs or in areas with fire and explosion risk. Companies that need to measure large parts but don’t want to invest in equipment can use an on-site 3D scanning service to get data for inspection or reverse engineering.
Frequently asked questions
Can a handheld 3D scanner capture objects tens of meters long?
Yes, but to keep accuracy along the full length you usually need a photogrammetry system to build a shared marker frame. If you only chain scans one after another, error can gradually build up toward the far ends.
Why 3D scan a ship propeller?
Propeller scan data is used to assess deformation and blade wear, check pitch, and serve as the basis for remaking or repairing the propeller. Compared with manual gauge measurement, 3D scanning gives a complete picture of the entire blade surface.
Can a laser scanner work outdoors?
Laser scanners usually handle ambient light better than white-light scanners, so they can work outdoors or in bright workshops. Even so, strong direct sunlight can still reduce data quality, so shade the area when needed.
What can scan data of a casting be used to check?
The scan data is compared with the CAD file to check shape deviation, warping, missing material and remaining machining allowance. The results help the shop decide whether to fix the pattern, adjust the mold or change the machining program.
