What is metal 3D printing and how does it work?
Metal 3D printing is a group of additive manufacturing technologies that build parts by melting or binding metal powder in thin layers based on a 3D file. The most common industrial method is laser powder bed fusion (SLM/DMLS): a layer of powder is spread evenly on the build plate, a laser scans and melts the exact cross-section of the part, then the plate lowers and a new layer of powder is spread. The process repeats until the part is finished.
The biggest advantage of this method is that it can make shapes that are hard or impossible to machine: curved internal cooling channels, hollow lattice structures, and single-piece parts that replace multi-part assemblies.
Common materials and applications
| Material | Properties | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel | Strong, good corrosion resistance | Machine parts, fixtures, food-grade components |
| Aluminum alloy | Light, good thermal conductivity | Heat sinks, housings, automotive and drone parts |
| Titanium alloy | Light, very strong, biocompatible | Medical, aerospace, sports |
| Tool steel | Heat and wear resistant | Mold cores with conformal cooling channels |
Besides production parts, metal 3D printing is also used for functional prototypes, small production runs and replacing discontinued spare parts.
Tips for ordering metal 3D printing
- Design for the process: surfaces at very low angles usually need supports. Optimize the build orientation to reduce supports and post-processing.
- Post-processing is required: parts usually need to be cut off the build plate, have supports removed, get stress-relief heat treatment, sandblasting or finish machining on mating surfaces.
- Tolerances: as-printed surfaces are usually not as smooth as CNC milled ones. Leave extra stock on fit holes and datum faces for re-machining.
- Cost: depends on part volume, build height, material and post-processing. Send your 3D file for an accurate quote.
If you need prototypes or a small production run, see our custom metal 3D printing service for advice on materials and post-processing.
Frequently asked questions
Are metal 3D printed parts as strong as cast or CNC machined parts?
They are usually equal to or better than cast parts if the printing and heat treatment are done right. Compared with CNC machined wrought stock, mechanical properties can vary with print direction, so critical load-bearing parts should be tested before use.
What file do I need for metal 3D printing?
Send a STEP or STL file with the material, quantity and any surfaces that need high accuracy. If you do not have a file yet, we can 3D scan a physical sample or design a new model before printing.
How long does metal 3D printing take?
It is usually measured in days, not hours, because it includes printing, cooling, heat treatment and post-processing. The taller the part in the Z direction, the longer the print takes.
When should I choose metal 3D printing over CNC machining?
Choose metal 3D printing when the part has a complex shape or internal channels, needs to be lighter, or is only needed in small quantities. For simple geometry in large quantities, CNC machining is usually more economical.
Can metal 3D printed parts be machined afterward?
Yes. Metal printed parts can be milled, turned, drilled, tapped and polished like regular stock. That is why 3D printing is often combined with CNC: printing for the complex shape and machining for the mating surfaces.
