The idea-to-design service from 3D Vietnams meets the needs of businesses in mechanical engineering, plastics and electronics.
- Save time and improve product quality with 3D technology in bronze casting.
- Airless bicycle tires have been 3D printed and will never go flat.
ABOUT THE SERVICE:
We offer an idea-to-design service that helps customers get products to market faster and design them more effectively. Throughout the product design process, our engineers combine their understanding of the product requirements with market trends to create the best concept for both the customer and the end user. As part of this product development process, the final product model goes through design, simulation, analysis and prototyping, which cuts development cost and time for the customer.>> 3D printers
YOUR IDEA:
You give us your idea with as much information as possible. Our experienced engineers will raise questions about the product so we can solve them together. Once we agree on a shared concept, our idea-to-design service gets to work.IDEA-TO-DESIGN SERVICE:
We have 9 years of experience in the field and in mold making, with leading engineers. The finished design includes the full form, renders and the internal structure needed for mold making and machining.

What are the steps in designing a product from an idea?
Idea-to-design is the process of turning a description, sketch or reference image into a complete 3D model with enough information for prototyping and production. A well-run project usually goes through these steps:
- Take in and clarify the brief: function, size limits, target users, intended material, manufacturing method and quantity.
- Sketch concepts: present a few styling directions for the customer to choose from before investing in detailed modeling.
- Build the 3D model: design the outer form and the internal structure such as ribs, bosses, snap fits and wall thickness.
- Render and review: produce images with colors and materials to judge the look, then revise based on feedback.
- Make a proof prototype: 3D print or machine a sample to check dimensions, assembly and how it feels in the hand.
- Finalize the package: lock the 3D file and technical drawings for mold making or machining.
What should you prepare before taking your idea to a designer?
The clearer the idea, the faster the project and the fewer revisions. Prepare a hand sketch or reference photos, the overall size you want, any existing components that must fit inside (circuit boards, batteries, motors, screws…) and the product’s operating environment, such as indoors, outdoors, or exposure to water or heat. Information on the intended manufacturing method (injection molding, casting, CNC or 3D printing) is very important, because each method has its own design constraints such as draft angles, uniform wall thickness or tool radius.
On confidentiality: if the idea is not yet protected, both sides should agree on a confidentiality agreement before discussing details. Ownership of the design files after completion should also be stated clearly in the contract.
How is idea-to-design different from reverse engineering?
Reverse engineering starts from an existing object, scans it in 3D and rebuilds the CAD model; idea-to-design starts from zero, with no physical sample. In practice the two are often combined, for example 3D scanning an existing component to design a new enclosure that fits it snugly. See our idea-to-3D design service for advice on the right approach for your product.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a 3D design from just a hand sketch?
Yes. Hand sketches, photos or a verbal description can all be used as input, as long as they come with the main dimensions and functional requirements. The engineer will ask questions to fill in any gaps before building the model.
How long does idea-to-design take?
It depends on complexity and the number of revision rounds. A simple product can be done quickly, while a product with many assembled parts that needs prototypes and several revisions will take longer.
What do I get when the design is done?
You usually receive 3D files (STEP and native software files), renders and technical drawings if requested. A STEP file lets you take the design anywhere for machining, mold making or 3D printing.
Should I 3D print a prototype before making a production mold?
Yes. Injection and casting molds are expensive and hard to modify, while a 3D printed prototype catches dimensional, assembly and appearance problems at low cost. It is the most important risk-reduction step before production.
Will my idea be kept confidential?
Ask for a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before sharing details, and state file ownership clearly in the contract. This is standard practice when working with an outside design firm.
