The EinScan Pro 2X 3D scanner and the EinScan Pro 2X Plus 3D scanner are new models developed from the earlier EinScan Pro series (EinScan Pro and EinScan Pro Plus). Put simply, S3D doubled the specs and kept the same price. A new era of POWERFUL, AFFORDABLE scanners starts here, giving people in mechanical engineering, woodworking, mold casting and more the chance to invest in 3D scanners for design and production.

How does a structured light 3D scanner work?
Multi-function scanners like the EinScan Pro use structured light. The scanner projects a series of light patterns onto the object’s surface, the camera records how those patterns deform, and the software calculates the coordinates of millions of points on the surface. As the user moves the scanner (handheld mode) or turns the object on a turntable (fixed mode), the captures are merged into a complete 3D model.
Data alignment usually relies on one of three methods: tracking the object’s geometric features, tracking markers stuck on the surface, or tracking surface color/texture. Objects with large flat or symmetrical surfaces usually need markers to avoid misalignment.
Handheld mode vs. fixed mode: when to use which?
| Criteria | Handheld mode | Fixed mode (tripod, turntable) |
|---|---|---|
| Object size | Medium to large (engines, body panels, large statues) | Small to medium (mechanical parts, large jewelry, small models) |
| Level of detail | Good, depends on the operator’s skill | Usually higher and more consistent |
| Speed | Fast over large areas | Automatic with little handling, but limited in size |
| Typical uses | On-site scanning, cars, motorcycles, large wooden furniture | Reverse engineering small parts, archiving, inspection |
Tips for choosing and using a multi-function 3D scanner
Before choosing a scanner, be clear on three things: the size of the objects you usually scan, the level of detail you need, and what the data is for (3D printing, reverse engineering or dimensional inspection). Manufacturer accuracy specs are usually measured under ideal conditions. When scanning large objects, accumulated error grows with length, so use markers or combine the scanner with an optical measurement system if you need high accuracy.
In operation, keep in mind:
- Calibrate the scanner regularly with the included calibration board, especially after transport.
- Avoid strong light shining directly on the scan area.
- Apply a thin coat of scanning spray to black, shiny or transparent surfaces.
- Use a computer with a dedicated graphics card and enough RAM to process data smoothly.
If you do not scan often enough to justify buying equipment, you can use a 3D scanning service per project. CT3D offers advice on scanning solutions, data processing and reverse engineering. Contact Hotline/Zalo 0975 008 728 for specific guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Do handheld 3D scanners need markers?
It depends on the object. Objects with many geometric features, such as statues and castings, can usually be scanned without markers. Objects with large, smooth or symmetrical surfaces, such as panels or tabletops, should have markers so the software can align the data accurately.
Can a 3D scanner capture color?
Some models offer an optional color camera module to record surface texture. Color data is useful for full-color 3D printing, digital displays or heritage archiving, while mechanical reverse engineering usually only needs geometry.
What file formats does a 3D scanner export?
The most common formats are STL, OBJ or PLY triangle meshes. These files can be used directly for 3D printing or surface CNC machining, or as input to reverse engineering software to rebuild a CAD file such as STEP.
What computer specs do I need to process 3D scan data?
Use a computer with a recent CPU, about 16GB of RAM or more, and a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card. Scans of large objects can reach millions of triangles, and a weak computer will slow down or freeze when aligning and smoothing the mesh.
