Photos of the Einscan SP 3D scanner:

Automatic 3D scanning is quite simple. Place the object on the automatic turntable and press the button. The turntable rotates in a number of steps that is a multiple of 4. After one full turn, the scan data appears on the computer automatically.

Besides the standard kit from the manufacturer, the Einscan SP can also be used with a separate tripod to scan larger, more complex objects.

The automatic scanning workflow on a desktop 3D scanner
The biggest advantage of an automatic 3D scanner is that you don’t have to move the scanner by hand. A typical scanning session goes like this:
- Calibration: use the included calibration board so the scanner knows the exact position of the camera and projector. Do this regularly or whenever the scanner is moved.
- Placing the object: set the object in the center of the turntable. Hold it in place with clay or a fixture if it tips over easily.
- Turntable scan: choose the number of rotation steps, and the scanner captures data at each angle during one full turn.
- Flip and add scans: flip the object to scan the bottom or hidden areas. The software aligns the scans by features or by points you pick manually.
- Meshing and export: choose the level of detail, fill holes, and export to STL or OBJ.
Objects that work well and objects that don’t
| Good fit | Poor fit |
|---|---|
| Small figurines, crafts, models | Objects larger than the scan area or too heavy for the turntable |
| Plastic, wood or ceramic parts with matte surfaces | Mirror-like surfaces, shiny metal, transparent objects (unless coated with powder) |
| Objects with plenty of geometric features | Thin objects such as leaves, threads, hair, fur |
| Rigid, stable objects | Soft objects that deform when rotated |
Tips for clean, complete scan data
Scan in a room with steady lighting, keep direct sunlight out, and limit vibration on the table under the scanner. Before each session, check that the scan head and turntable have not shifted since calibration. Use a dark, plain background so the software can remove it easily. For objects with deep cavities, add more scan angles and change the object’s position several times. After scanning, look carefully for holes before meshing, because automatic hole filling only works well on small holes. Frequently asked questions
Does an automatic 3D scanner need frequent calibration?
Calibrate it when you first set it up, after moving it, when the room temperature changes a lot, or when scans stop aligning well. Proper calibration keeps the accuracy the manufacturer specifies.
How long does one automatic turntable scan take?
One turn usually takes only a few minutes, but the total time for a finished model also includes flipping the object, extra scans, alignment and mesh processing. For simple objects, the whole process can take under an hour.
Why does my scanned model have holes or missing faces?
Usually the area was hidden from the camera, or the surface is too shiny or too dark. Fix it by changing how the object is placed, adding more scan angles and applying a thin coat of powder to difficult areas.
Can an automatic 3D scanner capture color?
Some desktop models can record color texture, while others capture geometry only. If you need color for digital display or full-color 3D printing, check this feature before choosing a scanner or service.
