3D scanning in Ho Chi Minh City is a non-contact way to inspect and digitize parts, replacing traditional manual measurement that is slow and error-prone. 3D scanning captures millions of data points in a few minutes and rebuilds product geometry with accuracy down to microns.
At Chuyen Tao Mau – CT3D, our 3D scanning service in Ho Chi Minh City goes beyond “capturing the shape”. We also provide engineering analysis, CAD modeling, tolerance comparison and reverse engineering support, so companies can move products into production or improve designs quickly.

How does industrial 3D scanning work?
A well-run 3D scanning project doesn’t start with turning on the scanner. It starts with defining what the data will be used for. For the same part, a file for a 3D printed mockup has very different requirements from a CAD file for mold machining or a tolerance inspection report. The process usually includes these steps:
- Receiving and assessing the part: size, material, surface (shiny, transparent, dark), geometric complexity and accuracy requirements.
- Surface preparation: markers are applied when needed, and reflective or transparent surfaces get a coat of matte scanning powder so the scanner captures data reliably.
- Scanning and alignment: the part is scanned from many angles and the scans are aligned into a complete point cloud or triangle mesh.
- Mesh processing: noise is cleaned, holes are filled, the triangle count is reduced sensibly, and STL/OBJ/PLY files are exported.
- CAD modeling or inspection: the mesh is converted into a surface/solid model (STEP, IGES), or compared with the original design file to produce a color deviation map.
Every step affects the quality of the final file. Skipping surface preparation or careless alignment often leads to meshes with holes, distortion or accumulated error on long parts.
How do 3D scanning, inspection and reverse engineering differ?
These three terms are often used together but serve different purposes. The table below helps you pin down what you need before ordering:
| Service | Main output | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| 3D scanning for digitizing | STL/OBJ mesh, optionally with color | Archiving parts, 3D printing copies, 3D visuals, display |
| 3D inspection | Deviation report, color map against CAD | Checking samples, mold acceptance, warpage analysis |
| Reverse engineering | Editable CAD file (STEP, IGES, SolidWorks file) | Remaking parts without drawings, product improvement, mold making |
In practice, many projects combine all three: scan the old part, rebuild the CAD, then scan the new product to compare. If you need a clean CAD file for machining, see our reverse engineering service from 3D scan data for advice on the right workflow.
How to prepare parts for 3D scanning
To save time and avoid extra costs, clean oil, grease and dirt off the part; disassemble assemblies if each part needs scanning; and clearly note critical surfaces, mating dimensions and target tolerances. For fragile or valuable pieces, discuss shipping and surface powder coating in advance. If the part is too big or can’t be moved, ask for an onsite scan. The more you tell us about how the file will be used, the better the engineer can choose the right equipment, resolution and processing approach.
Frequently asked questions
Can 3D scanning capture transparent or mirror-like objects?
Yes, but the surface needs preparation first. Transparent, mirror-finish or very dark objects are usually given a thin coat of matte scanning powder so the scanner picks up light consistently. The powder wipes off after scanning.
Which file format should I choose after 3D scanning?
It depends on the use. For 3D printing or viewing the model, STL or OBJ is enough. For editing and machining, ask for a STEP or IGES CAD file rebuilt from the scan data.
How long does it take to 3D scan a part?
Scanning itself usually takes from tens of minutes to a few hours depending on size and complexity. Mesh processing, CAD modeling or inspection reporting take longer, from one to several days.
Can you do 3D scanning at the customer’s workshop?
Yes, especially for large parts, heavy molds or permanently installed equipment. Handheld scanners let the engineer work directly on site; please provide a clear work area and a stable power supply.
Is our company’s 3D scan data kept confidential?
Agree on confidentiality terms before handing over parts. For products in development or not yet released, you can sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) covering how the data is stored and used.
