How do 3D printing, 3D scanning and reverse engineering work together?
These three services rarely stand alone. They complement each other in a product development chain. Knowing the role of each step helps companies order the right service and avoid extra costs:
| Step | Input | Output | When you need it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3D scanning | Physical part | Mesh data (STL, OBJ), point cloud | You have the part but no drawings, and need inspection or digitizing |
| Reverse engineering | 3D scan data | Editable CAD file (STEP, IGES, native software file) | You need to remanufacture, improve or make a mold from an existing part |
| 3D printing | 3D file | Physical model | Checking form and fit, making mold masters or small-batch production |
A typical example: a plastic machine part breaks and no spare is available. The part is 3D scanned, rebuilt as a CAD file through reverse engineering, the damaged area is fixed, and a sample is 3D printed for a test fit before machining it in the final material.
How is reverse engineering different from just 3D scanning?
Many customers think a 3D scan can go straight into production. In reality, scan data is a triangle mesh describing the surface. It includes the defects and wear of the real part and has no clear dimensions. Reverse engineering is where an engineer rebuilds the model with proper planes, axes and holes and editable parameters. This is the format you need for injection molds, CNC machining or technical drawings. Tips when ordering a full-package service
- Be clear about the end goal (printing a sample, making a mold, CNC, dimensional inspection) so the provider can choose the right scan accuracy and level of design.
- Provide fit information for mating parts, because a worn part may no longer match its nominal dimensions.
- Agree on delivery file formats from the start to avoid converting between software later.
- For confidential parts, sign a data non-disclosure agreement before handing over the part.
FAQ
I only have a physical part. Which service do I need to reproduce it?
You need 3D scanning to capture the geometry, then reverse engineering to get a CAD file for production. If you only need a copy for display, you can 3D print directly from the scan data without reverse engineering.
What file formats are delivered after reverse engineering?
STEP and IGES are the most common because they open in almost any CAD software. Native files such as SolidWorks can also be delivered on request. Agree on the format with your engineering team or machine shop before ordering.
Can 3D scanning be used to check part deviation?
Yes. Scan data can be compared with the original CAD file to create a color map showing deviation across the whole surface. This is useful for checking warping and shrinkage in cast or injection-molded parts.
Can a worn or broken part be reverse engineered?
Yes. Engineers use the intact areas, symmetry and mating information to restore the correct shape. Providing mating parts or fit dimensions helps make the result more accurate.
