How do 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis CNC machining differ?
The number of axes on a CNC machine decides which directions the tool can reach the workpiece from, and that directly affects what it can make. Choose the right machine to get the best time and quality:
| Machine type | How it works | Typical products |
|---|---|---|
| 3-axis CNC (and 2.5D) | The tool moves in X, Y, Z and cuts from the top down | Relief panels, wall cladding, cabinet doors, one-sided relief ornaments |
| 4-axis CNC | Adds a rotary axis so the workpiece spins around its center | Table legs, columns, balusters, simple round statues |
| 5-axis CNC | The tool tilts and rotates freely, reaching many faces in one setup | Complex 3D statues, mold patterns, parts with undercuts |
For round statues or parts with many hidden angles, a 3-axis machine has to cut several faces and then join them, while a 4- or 5-axis machine gives a more seamless surface.
Our CNC wood and foam machining process
- Prepare the file: the customer provides a 3D file (STL, STEP) or drawing. If you only have a physical sample, it can be 3D scanned to get the data.
- Program the toolpaths: the technician picks roughing and finishing tools and step-overs to suit the material and the surface finish required.
- Choose the stock: wood must be dried to the right moisture level to limit cracking and warping after machining. Foam density is chosen based on how the part will be used.
- Machine and inspect: rough, finish, check dimensions.
- Finish: sand, hand-finish, then apply PU paint, or a composite coating for foam parts.
Foam is especially good for large models, casting patterns, statue cores or stage props because it is light and fast to machine. See our CNC foam cutting service when you need large models or statue cores.
Tips for good CNC wood parts
Agree on the wood type, grain direction and stock moisture up front, since these are common causes of cracking after finishing. For fine ornaments, check the smallest tool diameter that can be used, because details smaller than the tool tip cannot be cut. For large runs, make a first article for approval before mass production, so mistakes are not multiplied.
Frequently asked questions
What file do I need to order CNC wood machining?
The most common are 3D files in STL or STEP for solid parts, and vector files such as DXF for flat-cut parts. If you only have photos or a physical sample, the workshop can design or 3D scan it to create a file.
Which wood is best for CNC carving?
Fine-grained wood with little fiber tear-out that has been dried to a stable state usually gives the best surface for CNC carving. Wood with many knots or high moisture tends to crack and chip small details during cutting.
What is CNC foam machining used for?
CNC foam is often used for architectural models, statue cores, patterns for composite molds, 3D letters and event props. Foam is light, cuts fast and is easy to coat for extra durability.
Do you take small orders or one-off CNC parts?
Usually yes. For small quantities, programming and setup make up a bigger share of the cost, so the unit price is higher than for batch orders.
