Self-assembled vs. factory-built imported 3D printers: what is the difference?
When looking at FDM 3D printers, buyers usually find two groups: self-assembled or kit printers (often open-frame, with generic parts) and factory-built commercial printers from established brands (often with an enclosed chamber, their own software and a quality check process). Each group has its own pros and cons and suits different needs.
| Criterion | Self-assembled, open-frame printer | Factory-built commercial printer |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Low | Higher |
| Stability on long prints | Depends on who built it; needs frequent tuning | Usually more stable, with less intervention |
| Printing ABS | Warps easily without an enclosed chamber | Enclosed chamber holds heat better |
| Workplace safety | Rarely has air filtration | Many models have an odor filter |
| Best for | Tinkerers and learners | Offices, R&D labs, schools |
Features to look for in a desktop 3D printer
- Enclosed chamber: keeps the temperature stable, reduces warping with ABS, and cuts dust and noise.
- Heated, self-leveling bed: helps the first layer stick and reduces failed prints.
- Multi-material support: PLA for display models, ABS for durable parts, TPU for flexible parts.
- Slicing software: easy to use, with presets for each material.
- Technical support and spare parts: nozzles, build plates and belts are wear parts.
Buy a printer or use a 3D printing service?
A desktop 3D printer makes sense when you print small models often and want control over timing. However, desktop FDM printers have limits on build size, surface smoothness and engineering materials. For models that need a smooth surface (resin), a large size or high-performance materials (PA12, metal), using a service is usually more sensible than buying several types of machines.
Many companies combine the two: they print quick prototypes in-house and order finished models from an outside 3D printing service. You can contact CT3D via Hotline/Zalo 0975 008 728 for advice on the right printing technology for each type of product.
Frequently asked questions
Which plastics can a desktop FDM 3D printer print?
The most common are PLA, ABS, PETG and TPU. PLA is easy to print and good for display models; ABS is tougher and more heat resistant but needs an enclosed chamber; TPU is a flexible plastic for elastic parts. Some printers can also print engineering plastics such as nylon if the nozzle can handle high temperatures.
Is printing ABS harmful?
When melted, ABS gives off fumes and a small amount of ultrafine particles, so print in a well-ventilated area or use a printer with an enclosed chamber and air filter. Do not run an ABS printer in a closed room where people work all day without ventilation.
Why do 3D prints often warp?
Warping happens when the plastic shrinks unevenly as it cools, especially with ABS and parts with a large base. Common fixes are a heated bed, an enclosed chamber that holds heat, glue or an adhesive sheet on the bed, and rounded corners at the base of the part.
Can a desktop 3D printer print large models?
The build volume of a desktop printer is usually limited to a few tens of centimeters per side. Larger models must be split, printed in pieces and joined, or printed on a dedicated large-format 3D printer if the part has to be one piece.
