3D scanning, or 3D digitizing, is a very simple task. As long as your company invests in a 3D scanner, it is very easy to do.
But what really matters is how the scan files are processed. 3D scan data processing is the core of the job.
Most scan data is used for mold design. So which factors matter most in scanning and in processing 3D scan data:
- The accuracy of the 3D scanner.
- The resolution of the 3D scanner.
- The creativity, formal training and natural aptitude of the design engineer.
- The reverse engineer (who processes the 3D scan data) must understand molds to analyze every feature of the scanned part clearly and to work through the scan data processing.
3D scan data is used for many different purposes
After scanning, besides converting the scan data into solid models (STEP, STP, IGS…), we also use the 3D scan data for 3D inspection. Accuracy reaches 0.005 mm. It can check complex profiles that CMM systems cannot measure or struggle with.

Steps for processing data after 3D scanning
Raw scanner data is only the starting point. To turn it into a usable digital product for mold design, machining or inspection, engineers go through a series of processing steps:
- Alignment: scans from different angles are joined using reference markers or shared geometric features.
- Cleaning: remove noise points and data from the turntable, fixtures and unrelated objects.
- Meshing: convert the point cloud into a triangle mesh and set the mesh density to suit the purpose.
- Mesh repair: fill holes from hidden areas, fix overlapping faces and smooth in a controlled way.
- Coordinate alignment: bring the model into the part’s standard coordinate system to make design and measurement easier.
- Conversion for the purpose: build parametric CAD, create freeform surfaces or run a 3D inspection comparison.
What can scan data outputs be used for?
| Purpose | Data needed | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3D printing copies | Watertight, error-free STL mesh | Check wall thickness and make sure the mesh is a closed solid |
| Mold design | Solid CAD file (STEP, IGES) | Requires understanding of draft angles, parting lines and material shrinkage |
| CNC machining | CAD or high-quality mesh | Use CAD for mechanical parts; a mesh can work for artistic surfaces |
| 3D inspection | Scan mesh + original CAD file | Align correctly before comparing so the results are meaningful |
The key point is that whoever processes the data must understand the end use. A file that prints well may not work for mold design, because molds need clear reference surfaces, draft angles and nominal dimensions. That is why processing usually takes more time and experience than scanning. If you already have scan data but need it turned into a production CAD file, see our reverse engineering and 3D scan data processing service.
Frequently asked questions
Why is processing 3D scan data more important than the scan itself?
Scanning only captures raw data with noise, holes and no engineering structure. Processing turns that data into a file you can use for production. The quality of processing decides whether the final file has the right dimensions and design intent.
Can 3D scan data be used directly for mold design?
Usually not, because molds need a solid CAD model with clear reference surfaces, draft angles and dimensions. The scan data must first be reverse engineered into a CAD file before the mold is designed.
Can I scan parts myself and outsource the data processing?
Yes. Many companies scan with their own equipment and then hire a specialist for data processing and reverse engineering. Make sure the scan covers the whole surface and has the resolution your requirements call for.
Which file format should I send when outsourcing scan data processing?
Send aligned STL or OBJ data, or the scanner software’s original project file if you have it. Include a description of how the data will be used and the required tolerances so the engineer can choose the right approach.
