“Difficult” products that often need a 3D scanning service
3D scanning is especially useful for objects that traditional measuring methods can barely handle. These are objects with free-form curved surfaces, lots of small details, or sizes too large to measure point by point by hand. Typical groups include:
- Statues, reliefs and artifacts: complex artistic surfaces that need to be digitized for scaling up, scaling down or making replicas.
- Vehicle bodies, plastic covers, car and motorbike parts: large curved surfaces where data is needed to design accessories or replacement parts.
- Old molds: no drawings left, so they need to be digitized for repair or for making new molds.
- Handicrafts and fine art products: carved wood and ceramics that need to be copied for mass production.
- Human body parts: for designing braces, protective gear and personalized products.
Scan in the workshop or on site?
| Option | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Workshop scanning | Small and medium parts that are easy to transport | Stable environment, easy surface preparation |
| On-site scanning | Large or heavy objects, installed equipment, or items that cannot be moved | Needs a prepared area, a power supply and shielding from strong light |
What is the scan data used for?
Scan data is the starting point for many next steps. For art pieces, the scan file can be edited and scaled, then 3D printed, CNC cut in foam, or used to make a silicone mold for casting composite or polyresin. For mechanical parts, the data is reverse engineered into a CAD file for machining or mold making. For quality inspection, the data is compared with the design file to find deviations. So when you order the service, tell the scanning provider how the data will finally be used, so they can pick the right equipment, resolution and file format from the start. You can send photos and rough dimensions of your product to the CT3D Group 3D scanning service via Hotline/Zalo 0975 008 728 or email contact@ct3dgroup.com for advice on the best approach.
Frequently asked questions
What should I prepare before bringing a product in for 3D scanning?
Clean the product, and write down what the data will be used for, the critical dimensions and the file format you want. If you have drawings or photos of the original product, send them too so the engineers can assess it more accurately.
Can 3D scanning damage or affect the product?
No. An optical scanner only projects light onto the surface, with no mechanical contact. If a shiny surface needs a powder coating, the powder can be wiped off or evaporates on its own after scanning.
Do you scan large statues or structures?
Yes. Large objects are usually scanned with a handheld scanner and positioning markers, or with long-range scanning equipment, depending on size. Discuss the location, site conditions and timing in advance so a suitable scanning plan can be prepared.
What formats does 3D scan data come in?
Common formats include STL, OBJ (optionally with color), PLY and, if reverse engineering is included, STEP, IGES or native CAD files. Tell us which software you use so you get the right format.
