Formlabs 3D printers have been on the market for a long time, backed by one of the strongest R&D teams in the world. Formlabs has grown fast in the fiercely competitive 3D printer market and holds an impressive market share. In Vietnam today, Formlabs 3D printers are used across many industries:Backed by its own world-class SLA 3D printing materials line, Formlabs has developed many top-tier materials. Notable SLA materials include ones that:
- 3D printers for dentistry.
- 3D printers for jewelry and investment casting.
- 3D printers for rapid prototyping.
- 3D printers that produce rigid end-use parts.
- Are as stiff as aluminum but much lighter.
- Burn out completely during casting.
- Are flexible, with better elasticity than rubber.
- And many other material grades worth a look.

How SLA 3D printing works and why the surface is so smooth
An SLA (stereolithography) 3D printer aims a laser at a vat of liquid photopolymer resin. Wherever the laser passes, the resin hardens into a thin layer. The build platform lifts one layer at a time and the process repeats until the part is done. Because each layer is very thin and the laser spot is small, SLA parts usually have smooth surfaces, sharp edges and much better fine detail than FDM filament printing. That is why SLA is popular in dentistry, jewelry, cosmetic models and engineering parts that need precise fit.
Finishing a resin print
An SLA part is not finished when it comes off the printer. The basic post-processing steps are:
- Wash: soak and agitate in IPA or a dedicated solution to remove uncured resin from the surface.
- Post-cure: expose to UV light with heat so the part reaches the material’s designed mechanical properties.
- Remove supports and finish: cut off the supports, sand the support marks, and paint or clear-coat if needed.
Skipping the wash or under-curing often leaves parts tacky, brittle or discolored over time.
What to consider when choosing and using an SLA 3D printer
| Criterion | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Build volume | Small machines for fine detail; large-format machines for one-piece models with fewer joints |
| Material range | Whether standard, flexible, high-temp, castable or dental resins fit your needs |
| Running costs | Resin, tanks and washing solution are regular consumables |
| Work environment | Liquid resin needs ventilation and gloves; avoid direct skin contact |
For a business that needs only a few parts a month, outsourcing is usually more efficient than buying a machine and managing consumables. Check out CT3D Group’s large-format SLA resin 3D printing service for finely detailed parts or large models, with advice via Hotline/Zalo 0975 008 728.
Frequently asked questions
How is SLA 3D printing different from FDM?
SLA uses a laser to cure liquid resin, so surfaces are smooth and details are sharp. FDM extrudes melted filament, so it costs less but shows layer lines more. SLA suits cosmetic models and small parts; FDM suits large models, fixtures and form-check prototypes.
Are resin prints durable?
It depends on the resin. Standard resin is fine for display models, while engineering resins like tough and high-temp resins are designed for assembly parts and functional testing.
Is 3D printing resin toxic?
Liquid resin can irritate skin and has an odor, so wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated area. Once washed and fully UV cured, the hardened part is much safer to handle.
Can SLA 3D printing be used for jewelry casting?
Yes. Castable resin is used to print patterns in place of wax, which then go through investment casting to make metal pieces such as rings and pendants.
