What problems does a multi-purpose 3D scanner solve for craft and machine shops?
The appeal of a multi-purpose 3D scanner is that one device can serve many kinds of products, from wood reliefs and composite statues to mechanical parts and molds. For a manufacturer, the real value is a shorter path from the original sample to the finished product:
- Craft workshops: digitize reliefs and statues to scale them up or down, edit them, and CNC machine them or make molds without carving again from scratch.
- Machine and mold shops: capture data for parts with no drawings, measure mold wear and support reverse engineering.
- Car and motorbike industry: scan plastic trim, wheels and body parts to design accessories and custom mods.
- Model archiving: keep a digital copy of the original so it is safe from damage or loss over time.
From scan data to finished statues and reliefs
In the statue and decoration trade, 3D scan data usually goes through this process:
- Scan the original (small statue, relief or clay model) and process the mesh.
- Edit on the computer: scale, mirror, add or remove details.
- Make a master model by 3D printing or CNC cutting foam or wood.
- Finish the master and make a silicone or composite mold.
- Cast the product in composite, polyresin, cement or bronze, then paint and finish it.
A few tips for good scan data: dark wood or glossy paint may need a powder coat; reliefs with many overlapping layers need scans from several tilted angles; and scan at a resolution that suits the size of the final product, not just the original. When you need statues in volume or at large sizes from a scanned model, see our composite statue production service based on 3D data.
Frequently asked questions
Can a 3D scanner capture highly detailed wood reliefs?
Yes. Wood reliefs are one of the most common uses for structured-light 3D scanners. For overlapping layers of detail, scan from several angles to avoid hidden areas.
Can statue scan data be scaled up many times?
Yes, but small details on the original, including surface flaws, get scaled up too. You usually need to edit and sharpen details on the digital model before producing at a large size.
Can a handheld 3D scanner be used for precision mechanical parts?
It works for many reverse engineering and general inspection jobs. For very tight tolerances, use a high-accuracy industrial scanner or combine it with a CMM.
Can I make a silicone mold directly from scan data?
Silicone molds are poured over a physical model, so you first need a master made by 3D printing or CNC from the scan data. In some cases you can also design and print a rigid mold to pour the silicone into.
How do I get advice on 3D scanning and statue production?
Contact CT3D by Hotline/Zalo 0975 008 728 or email contact@ct3dgroup.com. Send photos of the piece, the size and the material you want, and we will suggest the right process.
