How to order custom 3D printing remotely
For customers in distant provinces, the whole custom 3D printing process can be done online without visiting the workshop. A standard process usually includes these steps:
- Send your file and requirements: send a 3D file (STL, OBJ, STEP…) with a description of the intended use, quantity, color and surface requirements. If you don’t have a file, you can send 2D drawings, photos from several angles or a physical sample.
- File check: a technician reviews the file for mesh errors (open meshes, flipped faces, walls that are too thin) and suggests part orientation and support placement to avoid marks on important surfaces.
- Technology advice and quote: based on size, detail and the mechanical properties you need, we pick the right option among FDM, resin/SLA, SLS or metal.
- Printing and post-processing: support removal, sanding, priming, painting or other surface treatment as required.
- Inspection and delivery: dimensions are checked, acceptance photos are taken, and the part is packed with shock protection and shipped.
Choosing the right 3D printing technology for each need
Each technology has its own strengths. Choosing correctly from the start saves cost and rework time:
| Technology | Strengths | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|
| FDM (plastic filament) | Low cost, large build size, wide range of materials | Form-check prototypes, jigs and fixtures, architectural models |
| Resin / SLA | Smooth surface, sharp detail | Jewelry prototypes, statues, silicone mold masters, display products |
| SLS / MJF (plastic powder) | No supports needed, good mechanical properties, handles complex shapes | Assembly parts, small production runs, device housings |
| Metal (SLM/DMLS) | Load-bearing and heat-resistant parts | Mechanical components, molds with cooling channels, medical parts |
If you’re not sure which technology to choose, the quickest way is to send your file and describe what the part needs to do. You can check out CT3D Group’s custom 3D printing service to see the material and finishing options in use.
Tips to get a good print the first time
Many orders have to be reprinted simply because the design file didn’t account for how the printing technology works. A few practical tips:
- Walls should be thick enough, usually about 1–2 mm or more depending on the technology, to avoid warping or breaking when supports are removed.
- Mating parts need clearance, because each technology has different shrinkage and tolerances.
- For large parts, agree in advance on how to split them and where the joints go, so seams don’t show on the main surfaces.
- Mark which surfaces are cosmetic so the technician can place supports on hidden faces.
Frequently asked questions
Do you accept custom 3D printing orders for just one part?
Yes. 3D printing is best suited to small orders, even a single part, because no mold is needed. Cost is based mainly on material volume, machine time and finish level, so printing a one-off part is still far more reasonable than traditional machining.
Can I order a print if I don’t have a 3D file?
Yes. You can send 2D drawings, photos from several angles or a physical sample so the team can build a 3D model before printing. For an existing object, the usual approach is to 3D scan it and then edit the data for printing.
What file format should I send for 3D printing?
The most common formats are STL or OBJ for mesh files, and STEP or IGES if you have the original CAD file. The original CAD file makes it easier for technicians to adjust dimensions and tolerances when needed, so send it if you have it.
How long does a 3D printing order usually take?
It depends on size, quantity, printing technology and surface finish level. Small parts can often be done in a few days, while large parts that need painting take longer; the exact schedule is given when the order is confirmed.
How do customers in distant provinces receive 3D printed parts?
Parts are packed with shock protection and sent by courier to the customer’s address. Before shipping, customers usually receive acceptance photos to check; contact Hotline/Zalo 0975 008 728 to agree on delivery.
