Making inspection fixtures for a 3D CMM with a 3D printer is one of the new, useful applications of 3D printing in Vietnam. Besides fixtures for 3D CMMs (CMM machines), you can also make machining fixtures or fixtures for assembly lines. We expect that in the near future, as metal 3D printers become more common, we will be able to build even more useful metal machining fixtures and CNC fixtures.

Why is 3D printing a good fit for inspection fixtures?
An inspection fixture holds a part in the right position and orientation while it is measured on a CMM or 2D measuring machine, or checked visually on the line. Traditionally, fixtures are milled from aluminum, POM or steel, which takes programming time, machining time and material cost. With 3D printing, engineers can design fixtures that closely follow the part’s profile, print them quickly and adjust them fast when the product changes.
- Follows complex profiles: curved surfaces, ribs and off-center holes can be modeled directly from the product’s CAD file.
- Light and safe for the measuring table: plastic fixtures will not scratch the part or the CMM’s granite table.
- Easy to improve: when the model changes or a support point turns out wrong, just edit the file and reprint.
- Combines several functions: guide slots, magnet pockets, locating pins or numbered labels can be printed in.
Tips for designing and printing fixtures for measuring machines
| Factor | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Material | Choose plastics with good dimensional stability such as engineering resin, PA12 or ABS; avoid materials that warp with temperature changes in the measuring room. |
| Support and locating points | Apply the 3-2-1 locating principle and rest only on datum surfaces so measurements are not skewed. |
| Fit tolerance | Leave suitable clearance for the print technology; high-precision spots can be printed oversize and then finish-machined, or fitted with metal bushings. |
| Rigidity | Add stiffening ribs and avoid thin walls where clamping force is applied. |
| Check the fixture | Measure the fixture after printing before putting it into regular use. |
For fixtures that need a smooth, accurate surface, SLA or MJF usually gives better results than standard FDM. Companies can send the part’s CAD file for advice on a custom fixture 3D printing service, including the right material and print technology for the inspection environment.
Beyond CMM fixtures, the same approach works for assembly fixtures, Go/No-Go gauges and locating trays on production lines.
Frequently asked questions
Are 3D printed fixtures accurate enough for a CMM?
Yes, if you choose the right print technology and design the locating points well. The fixture mainly holds the part steady while the CMM takes the measurement, so what matters is that the fixture does not deform and locates repeatably.
Which technology should I use to print fixtures?
SLA gives smooth surfaces and sharp detail, MJF PA12 gives good strength and dimensional stability, and FDM suits large, low-cost fixtures. The choice depends on size, load and operating environment.
Do 3D printed plastic fixtures last long?
Yes, as long as they are used in a stable environment and not under very high clamping force. High-wear points can be fitted with metal bushings or pins for a longer life.
What do I need to order a printed fixture?
Prepare the 3D CAD file of the part to be measured, its datum surfaces and the key measurement points. If you do not have a file, the real part can be 3D scanned to provide data for the fixture design.
